Study on Some Llmnological Aspects of a Derelict Pond with a Note on Its Vertebrate Fauna

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Some chemical properties of water of a derelict pond situated in the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm Area. Mymensingh, were studied for a period of six months prior 10 cleaning and dewatering the pond to see the quality and quantity of life that could be sustained under such apparently abnormal conditions. The pond was found to be apparently unsuitable for most of the fish-life at least when dissolved oxygen, pH and free carbondioxide values were considered. However, the high values of free carbon dioxide and low values of dissolved oxygen were not, in fact, lethal for at least those fishes having some accessory respiratory structures. Serious growth and subsequent death and decomposition of water hyacinth was one of the prime factors to aggravate other characteristics in making the .environment of the pond unsuitable for the sustenance of most fish life.

Objectives:

To determine some of the chemical properties of water of a pond in the derelict condition, (it) to see their effects, if any, on the vertebrates there in the pond, and finally (iii ) to study the quantity and quality of life sustained under such apparently abnormal situation.

Methodology:

The different methods followed or the equipment used for the determination of various chemical factors of water were as under i) pH: With Fisher Laboratory pH.meter, Model No. 230. ii) Dissolved oxygen : Azide Modification (*APHA, 1971). iii) Free carbon dioxide : Titrimetric Method (APHA, 1971). ix) Nitrate.Nitrogen (NO₃-N) : Phenoldisulfonic Acid Method (AP- HA, 1971) by colorimeter. v) Phosphate-Phosphorus (PO₄-P) : Chlorostannous reduced molybdophosphoric blue colour method, in a sulphuric acid system by colorimeter. The pond was cleaned and dewatered by using a power pump after the period of present investigation to study the quality and quantity of life that could be sustained under sucli apparently abnormal condition.

Achievement/Findings:

An eighth species ( Nandus nandus) was reported as being exceedingly tenacious of life. The snakes and turtle, being air-breathing and independent of dissolved oxygen in the water, were possibly there in the pond for feeding purposes, and may be taken as casual visitors. It thus indicates that the pond, inspite of having some of its chemical properties f'avourable for fishes, was unfavouable for most of the fishes in respect of 0₂, CO₂. and pH of the water-which acted as limiting factors. In fact, the pond was unsuitable for most fishes except the so-called 'zeol' fishes. This situation is considered to be the result of dense growth of water hyacinth (Elchhonia crassipes) preventing penetration of light into the pond-water for photosynthetic activities and their subsequent death and decomposition with consequent decrease in dissolved oxygen and pH values, and increase in free carbondioxide concentration
