Heterosis and Inbreeding Depression in Wheat (triticum A..estivum L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Heterosis and inbreeding depression for some quantitative characters were studied in the F1 and F2 hybrids of Triticum sestivum L. The hybrid Inia-136 x Mexipak-65 produced highest grain yield/plant. Three crossas vlz., Sonalika x s , Norteno-76 and Mexipak-65 x Norteno-76 expressed positive heterosis over their respective mid-parental values for all the characters under study, except for days to flower of the hybrid Sonalika x Tanori. The hybrid Inia-66 x Mexipak 65 showed highly Significant inbreeding depression in the F2 for most of the characters.

Objectives:

To determine the extent to which heterosis and inbreeding depression is manifested from a five parent diallel cross in wheat (Triticum eestivum L.).

Methodology:

A diallel set involving five wheat varieties, viz . Sonalika. Inia-66, Mexipak-05' Tanori and Norteno-76. in all possible combinations of F1's without reciprocals was made in 1980 and 1981. They were designated in the study as Wl, W2, W3, W 4, and W5. respectively in the order they are mentioned in this paper. Seeds of F1 's and F2'S along with their parents were grown on 1st December, 1982 in a randomized block design with three replications. The experiment was conducted at the research farm of the department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, BAU. Mymensingh. Double rows of each parent and each F1 and four rows of each F2 were maintained in the study. Each row consisted of twenty plants having 25 x l0 cm plant space. Non-experimental rows were also grown to reduce border effects, Observations on days to flower. spike number per plant. spike length. karnel number per spike. 100 karnel weight and yield per plant were recorded on individual plant basis from 10 plants selected at random from each variety and each Fl and twenty plants from each replication of F2

Achievement/Findings:

According to these authors the heterosis for grain yield was significant and positive. All the crosses showed positive in- breeding depression for grain yield.
