Correlation Between Fibre Yield and Other Plant Characters in White Jute (corchorus Capsularis)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, Dhaka with ten improved cultivars of Corchorus capsularis L. in order to study the variability and character correlation for yield potentiality. Wide ranges of variability were observed for seven characters in the materials studied. Correlation studies showed a strong association between fibre yield and plant height, base diameter, bark weight and stick weight independently in all the cultivars and also between fibre and seed yield except CC-45. Partial correlation analysis indicated that fibre yield was more dependent on plant height in C₁ and on base diameter in 0-154, C₂, C₅, and CC-45 but in case of C₃, C₄, C₆, CVL-1 and CVE-3 fibre yield was dependent on both the characters. Multiple correlation revealed that the combined effect of plant height and base diameter maintained highly significant correlation (r = 0.71 to 0.98) with fibre yield in all the cultivars.

Objectives:

To analyze the correlations of characters between yield and its components as also other economic characters in ten improved cultivars of white jute and the contribution of each component of these improved cultivars.

Methodology:

Ten cultivars of Corchorus capsularis L. viz. D-154. C₁, C₂, C₃, C₄, C₅, C₆, CVL-1, CVE-3 and CC-45 were grown under the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, Central Station, Dhaka in 1983. Each cultivar was grawn in 6 meter long rows in each block laid out in randomized block design with 4 replications. The seeds were sown on 1. 4. 1983 by adopting an inter and intra row spacing of 30 and 5 cm respectively. From each replication 25 plants were randomly selected and harvested at mature fruit stage and observations were recorded on plant height, base diameter, bark weight, stick weight, fibre yield, seed yield, number of branches and number of fruits per plant. The estimates of the polar length of fruit, diameter of fruit and number of seeds per fruit were based on the observation of 5 fruits per plant selected at random. To study the relationship between fibre yield and its component as also other economic characters in all combination, the total correlation coefficients were calculated. The significance of contribution of anyone character to fibre yield after eliminating the effect of other characters was studied by testing the significance of partial correlation coefficients. Partial and multiple correlations and regression studies were made between fibre yield (y), plant height (x₁.) and base diameter (x₂)
