Effect of Phosphate and Potash on the Yield of Rice and Chemical Properties of Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was laid out In the green house of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding at the Agricultural University with non-calcareous dark-grey silt loam soil of Brahmaputra alluvium using 3 rates of P (@ 0.30 an d 60 kg P /ha from Hyperphosphate ) and 2 rates of K (@ 0 and 37 k/ha from Muriate of potash) with a basal dressing of 134 kg N/ha from Urea. The results show that phosphorus application significantly increased the grain and straw yields, whilst potassium and interaction between P and K failed to bring any significant effect. It was observed that P and K bad beneficial effect on some of the chemical properties of soil studied in the present experiment,

Objectives:

To find out the effect of Hyperphosphate and muriate of potash and their interaction on the yield of rice and soil chemical properties.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was carried out in the green house of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding of BAU, Mymensingh, with non-calcareous darkgrey silt loam soil (sand-ll-6%. silt-68'9% and clay-15-5%) of Brahmaputra Alluvium in order to see the effect of Hyperphosphate and muriate of potash on the T. aman rice (var-Nigersail) and chemical properties of soil. There were 6 treatment combinations and the combinations were obtained from 3 levels of P (@ 0, 30 and 60 kg P/ha from Hyperphosphate ] and 2 levels of K (@ 0 and 37 kg K/ha from muriate of potash). replicating 5 times making a total of 39 pots. A basal dressing of 134 kg N/ha from Urea was given to each pot. The design adopted was factorial conducted in completely / randomized design. Moist soil at a depth of 0.15 cm was collected from the field. The soil was mixed properly and then 5'0 kg moist soils (2.91 kg oven dry soil) were taken per pot. The full doses of P and K and half doses of N were mixed with the soil at the time of pot preparation. The rest half of N was applied in two splits 33 and 45 day after transplantation as top dressing. The pH of the soil was determined by glass electrode pH meter in 1 ; 2·5 soil : water ratio. Percentage of organic carbon was calculated volumetrically by Wet Oxidation method of Walkley and Black as described by Black ( 1965). Total nitrogen content of soil was determined by microkjeldahl method digesting the soil with Conc. H₂SO₄ and distilling with 40% NaOH, the ammonia distilled over was absorbed in Boric acid indicator and titrated with O.OIN H₂S0₄, (Piper, 1950). Ammoniacal nitrogen was determined by taking acidified NaCI leachate after Nessler's reagent method, described by Jackson ( 1962) measuring the colour intensity colorimetrically. The procedure followed for the determination of nitrate nitrogen was Phenaldisulphonic acid method as outlined by Black ( 1965 ) measuring the colour intensity by Coorimeter.
