Influence of Sowing Date Variation on the Incidence of Aphids of Mustard

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiments were conducted at the BINA farm, Mymensingh during the years 1987-88 and 1988-89 to determine the influence of sowing dates on the incidence of aphid (Lipaphis erysimi kart) and the damage caused by them on mustard plants. The mustard seeds were sown in the field at different sowing dates at an interval of 9 days. The first and last sowing were done on September 18 and December 2 respectively in both the years. The plants sown on October 18 had the lowest number of aphids per plants and the lowest percentage of aphid-infested plants. The incidence of aphids increased with the advancement of time. The last sowing caused the highest aphid infestation and the highest number of aphids per plant. The crops of 2nd sowing produced the highest yield.

Objectives:

It is imperative for the plant protection scientists to find out an alternative and cheaper means for the control of aphids suitable under the socio-economic conditions of Bangladesh. With this mind in view. mustard seeds were sown on several dates which would help the plants to escape aphid attack and at the same time ensure the maximum yield.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted during the winter seasons of. the years 1987-88 and 1988-89 at the farm of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh. Two mutants of mustard namely, BINA-1 and BINA-2 were used as test crops. There were five different sowing dates. These were: October 18, October 27, November 5, November 14 and December 2. The experiments were laid out in a split-plot design with three replications. The dates of sowing were assigned to the main plots. Each sub-plot was 5m x 4m in size. The row to row and plant to plant spacing were 25 cm and 10 cm respectively. The normal intercultural operations were followed and no chemical protective measures were taken. Data on the number of aphids available per plant were taken from 10 cm apical twigs of 10 randomly selected plants per plot at 60 days after sowing. Data on percentage of plant infested with aphids were collected from five randomly selected rows per plot. Seed yields were recorded after harvesting the crops. All the data were analysed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

It appears from the result of the present investigation that the aphid infestation in mustard plant can be reduced or avoided by careful selection of sowing date. This will help the farmer to reduce the production cost, because cultural method is generally the most economical of all the control measures . The conventional method of insect control may be too costly to justify year after year and for this reason many countries are trying to develop alternative methods of pest control. For cultural control of aphids on mustard in Bangladesh, the mustard seeds may be sown during the. last week of October. This will help plants to avoid aphid infestation and at the same time will produce the highest yield.
