Design and Construction of Bamboo Reinforced Concrete Bin and Its Application in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In Bangladesh steel is costly and scarce. This scarcity has forced us to search for a suitable alternative indigenous material that can be used as the reinforcing material in concrete for making semipermanent structures. In this study attempts have been made to design and construct a shallow circular bin with bamboo as the reinforcing material and to evaluate about its suitability as a grain storage structure. This is a new type of storage structure and its cost of construction is not so high in comparison to other structures of similar nature used in Bangladesh. Research results show that it is feasible for the use of the rural farmers of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

TO STUDY THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF BAMBOO REINFORCED CONCRETE BIN AND ITS APPLICATION IN BANGLADESH

Methodology:

Design theory: The first step in designing a grain storage shallow circular concrete bin, after selecting the cross section and dimension, is to determine the lateral pressure exerted by the grain. The weight supported on the walls, foundation and floor is then determined. The strength requirement of the side wall and hoops is based on the lateral pressure exerted and the load supported by the wall. The plane of rupture 'x' incorporates the effect of bin-wall friction and is represented by the equation (Richey, 1961). For design purposes the physical properties of grain and the materials of construction are to be known. If a bin has a smooth wall and the plane of rupture cuts the surface of the grain, Rankine's equations (Richey 1961) can be used for determining the lateral pressure on the bin wall and the total pressure exerted on the wall.

Achievement/Findings:

Insect development appeared in open bin in the month of June, 1978. About O. 15% of grains of upper layer was found to be damaged in the month of July. It was clear that the viability of grains was decreasing with the time lapse and it came to zero at the end of one year of storing. The grain temperature was found roughly proportional to the atmospheric humidity and it is least in the middle of winter season . This is a permanent and new type storage structure and its cost of construction is not so high in comparison to other conventional storage structures used in Bangladesh.
