Production and Utilization of Different Plant and Tree Species for Fruit, Timber and Fuel

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted at Kazirshimla and Noagaon villages under Mymensingh and Kishoregonj districts, respectively, to see the existing situation of production and utilization of different perennial plant and trees for fruit, timber and fuel. Forty eight perennial plant and tree species at Kazirshimla and sixteen at Noagoan were identified. At Kazirshimla village among the horticultural species betelnut (Areca catechu), jack fruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus), mango (Mangifera indica), coconut (Cocos nucifera) and among the forest species bamboo (Bambusa spp.), peetraz (Amoora rohutika), and chechra (Scirpus articulatus) were found as predominant ones. At Noagaon village, among the horticultural species jack fruit, coconut, mango, guava (Pstoium guajava) and among the forest species barun (Adina cordifolia) and mera (Trewia polycarpa) were found as predominant species. Data were recorded on average number, age, productivity, yield, utilization and other uses. A comparison of the ratio of tree planting and tree cutting between two villages was also made. Medium farms at Kazirshimla were found better to plant, maintain and utilize perennial plants and trees in the homesteads than other farms, while at Noagaon large farms were the best in all respect because of having largest homestead areas. Noagaon village was far behind Kazirshimla in all aspects of production and utilization of perennial plants and trees.

Objectives:

To identify the existing plant and tree species and evaluate their productivity, and
To identify the status of utilization of bearing products, wood, timber and fuel from the plantations.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at Kazirshimla and Noagaon villages during July 1990. Forty eight farms in each site comprising of large (0.20 ha). medium (0.15 ha). small (0.10 ha) and landless (0.04 ha) categories were selected randomly taking twelve farms from each category. Data were collected through interviews of the farmers by using predesigned questionnaires. The collected data were interpreted in tabular form and then analysed. Study areas: The Kazirshimla village belongs to the Trishal Thana under Mymensingh district. The area falls under the agro-ecological zone (AEZ) of Old Brahmaputra Floodplain. The land is medium high with non-calcareous dark grey floodplain soils. Generally two to three crops and to some extent even four crops are grown in a year in the area. The Noagaon village is situated under Karimgonj Thana of Kishoregonj district belonging to the AEZ of Sylhet Basin. The land is mainly low with acid basin clay soils. The whole area is flooded 5-8 m deep in the monsoon, while the basin centres (haor) remain wet throughout the year. Only one crop is grown in a year.

Achievement/Findings:

From the above discussion it was clear that in respect of production and management of homestead plantations Noagaon was far behind Kazirshimla village. Consequently scarcity of fruits, fodder, timber and fuel prevailed all over the village. At Kazirshimla medium farms proved more awareness and dependence on homestead plantations while it was noticed in large farms at Noagaon. However, it was encouraging that, plantation of trees and plants was increasing in both the villages gradually in comparison to tree cutting indicating farmers' awareness regarding their problems and needs.
