Genetic Variability in Tobacco (nicotiana Tobacum L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Performance of 20 exotic cultivars of tobacco was evaluated in a randomized block design with four replications at the B. A. U. Campus in 1976-77. Duncan New Multiple Range Test indicated difference for all the characters studied in some of the varieties of virginia tobacco. Leaf number, leaf length, leaf breadth and mature leaf yield showed high degree of genetic variability, high heritability and high genetic gain under selection, suggesting additive gene action for these characters. The correlation studies revealed a positive correlation among flowering time, leaf length, leaf breadth and weight of mature leaf.

Objectives:

The present research aimed at evaluating the extent of genetic variability existing in the introduced varieties of the virginia tobacco and studying associations between their morphological characters

Methodology:

Performance of 20 varieties of cigarette tobacco was studied to ascertain (i) the variability, genetic co- efficient of variation, heritability and genetic advance under selection, and (ii) correlation between different morphological characters. The experiment was conducted at the B. A. U. Farm, Mymensingh during October 1976 to March, 1977 in a randomized block design with four replications. Row to row and plant to plant distances were 90 cm and 60 cm respectively. Non-experimental rows around each replication were grown to reduce border effects. Normal cultural practices were followed during the period of exprimentation. Observations were recorded from 15 plants choosen at random from each variety of each replication. Data on flowering time, number of leaves, leaf length and breadth, plant height, and green leaf yield were recorded on individual plant basis at the time of emergence of the inflorescence, Genotypic and phenotypic co-efficient of variances were determined, broad sense heritability were estimated Expected genetic advance was estimated.

Achievement/Findings:

Number of leaves showed insignificant negative correlation with leaf length and positive phenotypic and negative genotypic correlations with weight of leaves and considerable positive phenotypic and genotypic correlations with leaf breadth and plant height. Leaf length showed significant positive phenotypic and genotypic correlations with leaf breadth and weight of leaves, and high negative phenotypic and low positive genotypic correlations with plant height. Leaf breadth had considerable positive phenotypic and genotypic correlations with plant height and weight of leaves. Plant height showed insignificant positive phenotypic and genotypic correlations with weight of leaves. Characters in tobacco varieties observed that total number of leaf, leaf length and leaf breadth were positively correlated with yield. In the present investigation late flowering was found to have association with leaf number, leaf length and leaf breadth which caused higher leaf yield.
