Effects of Methanolic Pithraj and Bullock's Heart Seed Extracts on Green Rice Leafhopper

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of methanolic extracts of seeds of pithraj, Amoora ruhituka Wright and Am., and bullock's heart. Annona reticulate Linn. on the orientation, feeding behaviour and growth response of green rice leafhopper, Nephotettix nigtopictus Stal. The results indicated repelling, deterrent or anti feeding actions, prolongation of nymphal growth period and increase of nymphal mortality of the test insect compared to those of control.

Objectives:

To see the effect of methanolic extracts of pithraj and bullock's heart seeds on the orientation, feeding behaviour and growth responses of green rice leafhopper, N. niqropictus.

Methodology:

The extraction procedure was a partially modified technique of Ascher. 50g of pithraj seeds were ground to powder in electric grinder and stirred with 1 litre of repellinq action of methanolic extracts. Treatments were replicated thrice in each test. Only one starved female hopper was introduced in each test tube and the feeding duration was observed for 30 minutes on both treated and control seedlings. The insect was considered to feed when it applied its proboscis and inserted the stylets. Each treatment was replicated thrice: Five newly hatched nymphs of the test insect were released on the treated and control seedlings kept in the test tube. Growth of nymphs was determined as- 1) the growth period required by the in nymph to reach the adult stage, and ii ) the percentage of nymphs becoming adults. Growth indices were expressed as the ratio of the percentage of nymphs becoming adults to the growth period. Each treatment was replicated thrice.
