Biology of Red Flower Beetle, Tribolium Castaneum ( Herbst) (coleoptera Tenebrionidae) on Stored Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Biology of TRIBOLlUM CASTANEUM (Herbest) was studied under laboratory conditions. Different stages of life cycle of the pest in stored wheat and the extent of damage caused by the larvae and the adults were studied. It was observed that mating took place within 1 to 2 days after emergence, The duration of mating varied from 1 to 2 minute and mating occurred both day and night. The incubation period, larval period, pre- pupal and pupal period, pre-oviposition and oviposition period were found to be variable showing maximum variations in case of oviposition period (84 to 160 days). There were eight larval instara found in T. Casteneum except for some females in which there were nine instars, possibly due to some reasons relating to temperature, humidity and quality of food supplied. The average longevity of the adults (male and female) were found 187 and 16l.5 days respectively. Average total period from egg to adult. preoviposition and oviposition period were found 43.9, 4.5 and 114.2 days respectively. The average percentage of damage caused by the larvae from emergence to the formations of pupae was 4. 9. The damage caused by adult beetle during the period of 7, 15 and 30 days was 0.78, 1.4 and 2.3 per cent.

Objectives:

To study the life stages of the pest in stored wheat under laboratory conditions

Methodology:

Various stages of life cycle of T. castaneum were studied at a constant temperature of 28⁰C, in incubator at 75% relative humidity. In order to get the pest all the year round for systematic study in the laboratory, four museum jars (45cm - 15cm) were half filled with fresh wheat grains. Sufficient number of beetle larvae and pupae were collected from the local market and were released in these jars. The jars were covered with pieces of thin cloth so that other pests could not get a chance to enter. Five pairs of newly emerged beetles (five male and five female) were released in separate dishes (100mm X I5mm) containing fresh wheat grains and were allowed to lay eggs. The eggs were left undisturbed till their eclosion. About 4-6 hours after hatching, the hatchlings were replicated 10 times at a density of 10. Every day observarions were made to see the larval ecdysis. The number of ecdysis, the duration of each instar, and their body size (we rerecorded. The measurements were taken with the help of ocular micrometer. The pupal duration and their sizes were noted. Observations were made and recorded on mating, pre-oviposition, oviposition period, the number of eggs laid per female, the viability of eggs and incubation period. The eggs were collected with the help of magnifying glass and binocular microscope. The longevity of the adult beetles and their body length and breadth Were also recorded. Deaths in all stages occurred due to natural cause. The dead adults, live adults, larvae and pupae were used in describing external morphological characters. Nature and extent of damages were also recorded.
