Effect of Mixed Cropping of Chilli and Aniseed by Varying Seed Ratios

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Palima, Tangail to find out the optimum seed ratios of chilli and aniseed as a mixed crop. The seed ratios tested were 100:25; 100:50; 75:25; 75:50 and 50:75 of chilli-aniseed and monoculture of chilli and aniseed. Highest population of the mixed crop of chilli-aniseed (7 5 :50) enhanced yield and net return over monoculture and other mixed cropping treatments. Higher net return of Tk. 39,491 /ha with the benefit cost ratio of 6.33 and the highest chilli yield equivalent (1148.75 kg/ha) were obtained from the same treatment (75:50). The second highest net return of Tk. 39,211.22/ha was obtained by 100:25 chilli-aniseed mixed cropping with the land equivalent ratio (LER) of 1.52. The compatible and promising seeding ratios for chilli-aniseed combination was found to be 75:50 and 100:25.

Objectives:

To determine the suitable ration of Chilli and Aniseed for profitable crop production

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at Palima, Tangail during the winter season from 1990 to March 1991. The treatment combinations of chilli and aniseed were 100:25; 100:50; 75:50 and 50:75 and monoculture of the crops. The experiment was laidout in a randomized complete block design with six replications. The unit plot size was 10m x 5m. The soil of the experimental field was silty clay loam having pH value 5.6. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 60 kg N, 50 kg P₂0₅ and 45 kg K₂0 per hectare from urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash respectively. Whole of the phosphate, potash and half of urea were applied as basal dressing and the remaining half of urea was top dressed in two equal instalments at 25 and 50 days after sowing. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Periodical harvest of chilli was done at 110, 117, 124, 131 and 138 days of sowing. Fresh weight of harvested chilli was recorded and converted into dry weight according to Rashid (1983). The aniseed yield was recorded after harvesting at 150 days of drying. The economic evaluation was made in consideration of present commodity prices. The collected data were analysed statistically to find out the advantage of yield as mixed cropping.

Achievement/Findings:

It can be concluded that chilli in association with higher aniseed population allowed to use the land most intensively. In mixed cropped situation, the nutrients were used in growth competition resulting vegetative growth and lesser grain per plant. The crops in pure stand generally gave higher yield. Lower crop yields in mixed cropping were partly attributed to lower population. The findings showed that the most compatible and promising seedling ratios for chilli and aniseed combination were found to be 75:50 and 100:25. The farmers may be motivated to grow mixed crop of chilli and aniseed instead of growing sole crop.
