Effects of Moisture Level and Ensiling Period on Chemical Composition and in Vitro Digestibility of Urea Treated Rice Straw

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Rice straw, chopped to 4-5 cm size and adjusted at 55, 60 and 65 per cent moisture levels was treated with urea at 5 per cent (w/w) level on dry matter basis. A total of 27 silage samples were prepared and kept in polythene bags and stored for 14, 21 and 28 days at ambient temperature to study the effect of moisture content and treatment time on the chemical composition, in vitro organic matter digestibility and energy content of rice straw. There was no significant (P> 0.05) effect on in vitro organic matter digestibility (lVOMD). digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) content of 5% treated rice straw due to different moisture level and ensiling period but slight increase of DE and ME content was observed due to increase in moisture level from 55 to 65 per cent.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum moisture level and duration of ensiling period by considering the influence on the chemical composition, in vitro digestibility of OM and energy (digestible and metabolizable) content.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in 1987 in the Department of Animal Nutrition, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The design of experiment followed was Completely Randomized Design (CRD) and the data were subjected to analysis of variance. Rice straw was chopped into 4-5 cm in length and spread on concrete floor. Five kg urea was added per 100 kg rice straw on OM basis. Moisture levels of 55, 60 and 65 per cent was maintained in the silage by adding 1689,2105 and 2641 ml of water per 1645 g rice straw respectively. Urea solution was sprinkled over the straw with simultaneous mixing. A total of 27 silage sample were prepared and kept in separate polythene bags of 112 X 76 cm (0.2 mm thickness). The bags were made airtight by sealing with heat and kept for different periods (14, 21 and 28 days). At the end of each period, corresponding bags were opened and the material was air dried for 3-4 days under shade and then dried in an oven for a period of 10 minutes at 105°C. The oven dried samples were ground to pass through 1 mm seive and stored for further analysis. The representative samples of silage were analysed for proximate components (AOAC, 1984). The samples were analysed for in vitro digestibility of OM and DE and ME content by the method according to Menke et al. (1979). For in vitro studies, the rumen liquor was collected from permanently fistulated deshi bullock maintained on a standard diet (straw based) to meet the nutrient requirements (Kearl, 1982). The samples were incubated for 24 hours in a shaking water bath maintained at 39°C. The in vitro technique followed in the experiment was that designed by Menke et al. (1979). Digestibility of organic matter and digestible and metabolizable energy values were calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

The above results indicate that the chemical composition and IVOMD, DE and ME content of 5% urea treated rice straw had no significant effect due to 55 to 65 per cent moisture level and ensiled for the period of 14 to 28 days. Therefore, the rice straw could be treated at 5 per cent urea with 55 per cent moisture level and ensiled for optimum period of 14 days.
