A Comparative Study of the Performance of Different Pure and Crossbred Chicken

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out with 250 day-old pure and crossbred chicken in Agricultural University Poultry Farm to compare their performances on body weight, feed efficiency, sexual maturity and livability. The average cumulative body weight gains of chicken were found highest in.group B 3 (100)% R. I. R.), lowest in group B₄ (100% W. L. ) and intermediate in crossbred chicken (group B₁ B₂ and' B₃_. in all estimated age groups. The average cumulative body weight gains chicken of group B₅ were significantly higher (P <0.05) than that of group B₁, B₂B₃ and B₄at the age 24th week. No significant differences were observed among the different' groups of crossbred chicken. The average cumulative body weight gains of crossbred chicken of group B₂and B₃_' were significantly, higher (P comparing with that of group B₄ at 13th week of age, The- purebred birds of group B₄ attained early sexual maturity' and' lowest' average body weight at sexual maturity in 165 days comparing with other groups. Objectives:

To see the performance of different pure and crossbred chicken

Methodology:

The chicks Were divided equally and randomly into five groups having each group with two replications. Treatment groups Were distributed randomly in ten well cleaned disinfected brooder boxes. Treatment groups with its replications were identified properly and pure bred birds were treated as control. Each group was provided with separate cleaned disinfected feeder and water. The birds of all groups were provided with same ration of identical composition. Feed and cleaned cold water Were supplied to the birds ad-libitum. The experimental birds were provided with identical care and management through the whole period of experiment. The chicks were kept in the brooder box for four weeks. In the first and second week 100 watt bulbs Were used in the brooder boxes to maintain proper temperature for brooding the chicks and in the third and fourth week 60 watt bulbs were also used for the same. After that birds of different groups kept in separate pens Were provided with fresh litter ( saw dust) and was continued to rear in those pens up to the end of the experiment adjusting their required space. The birds were vaccinated against New Castle disease and fowl pox. Avisol (sulphaquinoxaline solution, 45%) and Embazine ( sulphaquinoxaline solution, 10.32% ) were used alternatively at the rate of two ounces per gallon of water and one ounce per one and a half gallon of water for preventing coryza and coccidiosis respectively. Vitamin B-Complex was also supplied to the birds in drinking water at regular interval (thrice a week) for preventing vitamin deficiency

Achievement/Findings:

The birds of group B₄ attained early sexual maturity ( 165 days) than the birds of other groups ; and the average body weight at sexual maturity was also lowest (1118.16 gms.) than the other groups. It is observed that the percentages of livability were higher in crossbred birds in comparison to that of purebred white leghorn. The livability percentage of group B₅ was similar with that of group B₁ and B₃ which might be due to different genetic makeup and breed heteroristics.
