Thirty six (6-8 month old) goats were grouped into six, each consisting of six animals. Animals of all the groups were dosed with Bilevon-M. and then all the groups were subdivided into two. One subgroup of all the groups was treated with Bilevon-M. , 21 days after the first dosing and other subgroups were treated with Trodax, 21 days after the treatment with Bilevon-M. Treatment with Trodax continued for a few weeks. Animals of all the groups were pastured for two months and were sacrificed after 15 days of their withdrawal from pasture. Animals allowed to graze in the pasture from June to February had in fections with Fasciola sp. with the highest possibility of infection during the period of July- October.

To find out the seasonal strategy for chemoprophylactic programmes against fascioliasis in and around the Bangladesh Agricultural University campus.

Thirty six black bengal goats, (6 to 8 month old), were purchased from hilly areas of Mymensingh District (where intermediate hosts of Fasciola sp. are generally not found) and were allocated by weight into six groups of six each and numbered 1 through 6. Prepasturing faecal examinations of all the animals of six groups . ere negative for liverfluke eggs. Never- theless, they were dosed twice with flukecides at an interval of 21 days to make the animals free of any latent liverfluke infections. All these animals were allowed to graze in the pasture land used by the livestock of Bangladesh Agricultural University and known to be infested with metacercariae of Fasciola sp. Animals having tag number 1 to 3 and 4 to 5 of all the groups were treated as control and tested animals respectively. Faecal samples of group 'A' were examined twice a week and then they were dosed with t (one half) tablet (37.5 mg) of Bilevon-M to each of the animal of the group which was repeated after 21 days for animal No. 1, 2 and 3 and animal No.4, 5 and 6 were dosed with ½ cc. of Trodax. First two doses of flukecide were administered to make the animals free of liver flukes, if there be any. Dosing animal No.4, 5 and 6 of this group with Trodax was continued for 3 weeks when the dose rate was 1/4 cc. per animal per week. After first dosing faecal samples of these animals were examined twice a week and continued up to the first week of the second dosing. During the period of treatment the animals were kept stallfed and then they were allowed to graze in the Fasciola infested. Bangladesh Agricultural University pasture land for natural infection with Fasciola sp., for a period of two months. During the grazing period the faeces of these animals were examined twice a week. Thereafter, they were withdrawn from the pasture land and were kept stallfed for 15 days. During this period their faeces were examined twice a week which were continued up to the day before they were sacrificed. The animals were then sacrificed one from treated (continuous treatment with Trodax) and one from nontreated (two dosing with Bilevon-M) group in every two weeks for collections of Fasciola sp.p., if there be any. The day the animals of group 'A' were withdrawn from the pasture land the animals of group 'B' were put in there and the procedure followed for group 'A' was repeated for the animals of group 'B'. The same procedure was also followed for the subsequent groups of animals. To correlate the results of this study with the weather factors to find out the strategic period for adoption cf chemoprophylactic measures against fascioliasis the monthly average temperature, humidity and rainfall were recorded during the study period.

The results of this experiment that the ruminants might get infection with Fasciola sp. if they are allowed to graze in the pasture land of Bangladesh Agricultural University campus during the period from June to February. Possibility of highest infection was observed during the period from July to October. The findings of this experiment may also be applicable to all other parts of the country. Under similar weather conditions, infection of ruminants by Fasciola sp. may be avoided by strategic chemoprophylactic programme with the therapeutic agents which have potentiality against flukes of both bile duct and prebile duct stages. This programme should start from the later part of June and should continue for 8 weeks in Bangladesh.
