Studies on Some Hematological Values of the Pabna Cattle

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The blood of 30 cattle of typical Pabna type was utilized for the study of the morphology in fixed smears and a number of blood elements and also for the different hematological values. There were 11 male and 19 female experimental cattle. The number of HBC in the male varied between 5.02 and 7.96 million per cu. mm. The number of WBC in the male varied from 5.500 to 13.550 per cu.mm and from 5,750 to 12.350 per cu. mm. Hemoglobin values varied from 8.5 to 14.0 gm. percent in the male and from 8.9 to 14.5 gm. percent in the female. Other parameters have also been studied and reported.

Objectives:

To study the normal hematology in order to establish the standards for the different blood constituents.

Methodology:

Thirty Pabna cattle in good condition selected at random were utilized for the experimental studies. All the animals belonged to the Bangladesh Agricultural University Dairy Farm. The age of the .anirnals selected varied from 2 to 6 years. Care, management and feeding conditions were more or less same for ail animals during the investigation. Blood samples were drawn from the juquIar vein as per method. 5 ml of the venous blood was collected from each animal in .anticoagulant tubes which were previouslv prepared. 5 ml capacity tubes with wide mouth and screw caps were utilized for collecting the samples of blood. The blood samples thus collected were used to determine blood cell counts, hemoglobin concentration and packed cell volume (PCV). Counting of Corpuscles: (i) Red Blood corpuscles (RBC) : The blood was diluted in Thoma diluting pipette using the Hayems diluting fluid. The Neubeer counting chamber was used for counting. (ii) White Blood corpuscles {WBC) : For the estimation of WBC the blood was diluted using the Turk's diluting fluid. For the differential count, blood smears prepared from fresh blood in clear greese-free slides and stained with Giemsa's stain. Hemoqlobln estimation : It was done by the Acid-the-malin of Sahli and Hellige hemometer was employed for the purpose. Packed Cell Volume (PCV) : Wintrobes hematocrit tubes were used for the purpose and the experiments. Skin Bleeding time: It was found out 8S per Duke's method. Coagulation time: The slide method as per Simon was used in determining the coagulation time of blood. Sedlmentation Rate (ESR): Wintrobas method was followed. Morphology of blood Cells: This studv was made In fixed smears stained by Giernsa's stain which did not indicate any characteristic feature worth mentioning here. Data obtained were sfatistically ana lysed accordlnq to Blommers and Lindquist.
