Effect of Stage of Maturity on Protein, Cell Wall Constituents, Nutrient Digestibility and Energy Content of Sunhemp (crotalaria Juncea) Forage

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted to see the effect on chemical composition, nutrient digestibility and energy content of sunhemp harvested at three stages of maturity (50, 65 and 80 days of age). It was observed that the crude protein (CP) content of the whole plant reduced with advancing maturity from 14.1 % at 50 days to 9.4 and 8.0% at 65 and 80 days of age respectively. CP content of leaf and stem was also declined Significantly (P<0.01). Neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) contents of whole plant, leaf and stem were significantly (P<0.01) increased. The in vitro dry matter and organic matter digestibility (IVDMD and IVOMD) of whole plant, leaf and stem decreased significantly (P<0.05) with advancing maturity of forage except IVDMD of stem. The average ME contents (MJ/kg DM) of whole plant, leaf and stem were 6.3, 6.9 and 6.1 at 50 days; 6.1, 6.5 and 5.6 at 65 days and 5.6, 6.0 and 5.3 at 80 days of age respectively. The ME contents were significantly (P<0.05) reduced with the increasing age of the plant.

Objectives:

To see the effect on protein, cell wall constituents (NDF and ADF). in vitro digestibility and energy content of sunhemp forage harvested at 3 stages of maturity.

Methodology:

Samples of sunhemp harvested at 3 stages of maturity (50, 65 and 80 days) were collected from the experimental field of the Animal Nutrition department, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Immediately after harvesting, whole plants were sub-sampled into whole plants, leaves and stems. All the samples were dried in the sun. The dried samples were ground to pass through 1 mm screen and stored in airtight polythene bags for further analysis. Crude protein (CP) analysis was conducted by AOAC (1984) and cell wall constituents (NDF and ADF) were determined by Goering and Van Soest (1970). The in vitro digestibility of dry matter (IVDMD) and organic matter (lVOMD) at different stages of maturity were carried out by Telley and Terry (1963). The energy content of the sunhemp was measured by the technique developed by Menke et al. (1979). The data were analysed statistically by using randomised block design.

Achievement/Findings:

The average ME contents (MJ/kg DM) of whole plant, leaf and stem were 6.3, 6.9 and 6.1 at 50 days; 6.1, 6.5 and 5.6 at 65 days and 5.6, 6.0 and 5.3 at 80 days of age respectively. The ME values ware significantly (P < 0.05) reduced with increasing age of the plant. Jayal and Johri (1977) found higher ME value (8.4 MJ/kg DM) of sunhemp at 45 days of age which is higher than the value obtained (6.1 at 50 days of age) in the present experiment. It can be concluded that the stage of maturity had a marked effect on the chemical composition, nutrient digestibility and energy content of sunhemp.
