Occurrence of Arthropods in the Stomach of Indian Bullfrog Rana Tigrina (daudin)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Sixty five families of Arthropods were recovered from the stomach of 272 Rana tigrina samples collected from 31 districts of Bangladesh. Nine out of these 65 families were so far undocumented as the food of frog. Thirty one families are general.y considered to be obnoxious, of which 25 families are destructive to Agricultural crops. 468 individuals amounting to 60.59% of the Arthropods and 39.59% of the total individual consumed were found to be obnoxious.

Methodology:

Meterials used to evaluate the position of Arthropods among the food items were 272 frog samples collected from 21 districts of Bangladesh viz, Mynensingh, Jamalpur, Kishorganj. Netrakona, Comilla. Chandpur, Brahmanbarla. Sylhet, Habiganj Maulvibazar. Maijdi. Laxipur, Chittagong. Rangamati, Naravanqanj, Dhaka Barisal. Patuoakhali. Khulna, Satkhira, Jessore. Jhenaidah. Magura. Pabna. Rajshahi, Nawabganj Bogra. Rangpur. Gaibandha. Dinajpur. and Thakurqaon during 1982-83. At the time of sampling, date. locality of collection. snout to vent length and body weight of the frog samples were recorded. The frog was then killed and dissected to collect the stomach The stomach was immediately preserved in 10% formalin in a lebelled polythene bag after recording its weight with the food contents. The .preserved stomachs were then brought to the laboratory and were cut open and the contents of each of the stomachs were collected seperately for fututre analyses. The food items were inspected under a binocular dissecting microscope and the arthropods were separated.

Achievement/Findings:

It may be concluded beyond doubt that R. tigrina checks down the obnoxious insect population in nature and could be sued as a "biological control agent '.
