Water Loss in Irrigation Canals of Bangladesh Agril. University Farm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The water loss due to seepage and other causes in ordinary irrigation canals is a common problem, but in lined canals this will be very negligible. In this investigation the loss in lined irrigation canals of the Bangladesh Agricultural University farm is found to be 12.89 percent of the total flow. This is much higher than the recommended loss which is equal to 0.143 percent. This may be due to bad workmanship in the construction 0f earthen bands at the diversion points of the canals. Secondly the maintenance of the canals is not satisfactory at all, as there are cracks and crevices in many places of the canals through which water goes out.

Objectives:

a) To determine water loss in irrigation canals of the Agricultural University farm and thereby assess the financial loss incurred due to bad workmanship. b) since soil-water is a localised problem of agroclimatic zones, it was undertaken to determine the variations in Iocal conditions. c) to determine the water loss and hence conveyance efficiency, and there by to give necessary suggestions for improvement in conveying water in irrigation canals

Methodology:

Field experiment was conducted during March, 1975. General performance of work on measuring the depth of water flowing through the canal, breadth and the length of the canals from the point of discharges in question were done with steel scale and tape. The canals were cleaned first and the pump was started so that water flew through the canals to three discharge points 1, 2 and 3 . The depths of water in the canals Were measured simultaneously at 1, 2 and 3, at five minutes interval. The average breadths of the canals at three discharge points were measured and hence the area of flow of water at each interval was found out. The lengths of the canals at three discharge points from the supply point were measured.

Achievement/Findings:

Since most of the canals of Bangladesh are earthen canal and therefore it was the vital necessity to determine the water loss in earthen canals so that it might be brought into consideration design and operation of the irrigation projects, but due to several causes it was not possible. The total loss is 12.89 percent of the total flow. According to Linsely water loss in lined canals may be as low as 0.05 ft3 / ft/day, but the investigation result is 4.50 ft³/ft/day, which is much higher than the above recommendation.
