Comparison of Different Methods for Estimation of Evapotranspiration

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Accurate estimates of actual. ET. and potential, ETp. evapotranspiration over large areas ere needed fer hydrologic studies. and other practices related to efficient utilization of water resources. A simple method of estimating monthly ETp, was. therefore, identified to test the reliability of traditional methods for estimating ET and ETp at various locations in Bangladesh. Major climatological parameters like temperature. relative humidity, wind speed. precipltation and sun shine hours for a period of 5 years from eight difterent but evenly distributed locations in Bangladesh were collected and analyzed for estimating ET and ETp. Of the eleven methods compared. ETp rates estimated by Blaney and Criddle was found to be the most suitable and accurate method at various locations in Bangladesh. A fairly satisfactory agreement was attained between ET and ETp at Dhaka.

Objectives:

To compare the applicability of traditional empirical and deterministic potential evaotranspiration methods

To predict ETp and to estimate ETp at various locations of Bangladesh based on the suitable method.

Methodology:

Eight different locations. namely. Dhaka, Comilla, Mymenslnh, Bogra, Rajshahi, Jessore, Barisal and Chittagong which are atmost uniformly distributed and major climatological data like temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, rainfall and sun shine hours for a period of 5 years from 1976-1980 were collected from these stations for estimating actual and potential evapotranspiration. The data ware then reduced to annual mean monthly values. Traditional, empirical and deterministic potential evaotranspiration methods for predicting ETp were used for selecting a suitable method.
