Effect of Fertilizer Placement and Irrigation on Mexican Wheat (triticum Aestivum )

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The fertilizer placement did not show any significant influence on the grain and straw yield of wheat cultivar INIA-66. But irrigation played a significant effect on the grain and straw yield at 1 % level of probability. The highest yield of grain and straw were obtained with three irrigation. The grain and straw yield increased with the increase of irrigation frequency. Interaction due to fertilizer placement and irrigation failed to show any significant effect on any of the plant characters under observation.

Objectives:

To investigate the effect of fertilizer placement and irrigation on the yield of a Mexican cultivar of wheat INIA-66.

Methodology:

An investigation was made at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm. Mymensingh during the "Rabi" season of 1974-75. The. texture of the soil was sandy loam with a pH value ranging from 6,5 to 6.8, In this study four fertilizer placements, viz, broadcasting at seeding, broadcasting at first irrigation, plough sole placement at seeding and top dressing (after 14 days of germination) were included under four levels of irrigation, that is, no irrigation, 1 irrigation ( on 22nd day of seeding), 2 irrigation ( at 22 and 46 days of seeding ) and 3 irrigation (after 22, 46 and 65 days of seeding ). The experiment was laid out in randomized block design. There were 4 blocks in the experiment and each block was divided into 16 plot for accommodating 16 treatments. The net area of each plot was 10.154 square meter. The plots were fertilized with 99 kg N, 66 kg P ,06 and 33 kg Kia per hectare through urea, triple supperophate and mariate of potash respectively. The fertilizers were applied as per specification. The seeds were sown by hand in well prepared land of the experimental plot on November 28, 1974 at the rate of 70 kg per hectare at a distance of 25 em from row to row. The fertilizers applied as broadcast and as plough sole placement, before sowing of seeds as per schedule. In case of plough sole placement, the full dose of fertilizers were applied in furrows and covered with soil and then seeds were sown in the furrows. After sowing, the seeds were covered with soil. Weeding, thinning, irritations and other intercultural practices were carried out as when necessary in the experimental plots. The crop was har- vested 108 days after sowing and post harvesting operations were done care fully. Data on individual plant characters - were recorded from ten randomly selected plants. from each plot. The data were analyzed statistically and the signi ficance of mean differences was adjusted by Duncan's New Mutiple Range Test ( Steel and Torie, 1960).

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the experiment revealed that fertilizer placement had a significant effect on plant height, length of panicle, number of total grain per panicle and number of fertile grains per panicle at 1 % level of significance. But all these yield contributing characters could not, however, produce any significant increase of grain and straw yield. Irrigation treatment exhibited significant influence on the yield and yield contributing characters of wheat except 1000 grain weight). The height of the plant, the number of total and effective tillers per plant, panicle length, the number of total and fertile grains per panicle, straw and grain yields increased gradually with the increasing levels of irrigation. The maximum straw yield was obtained with three irritations, which was statistically identical with that produced with two irrigation. The two irrigation had better performance than one irrigation and one irrigation was found to be superior to no irrigation.
