Qualitative and Quantitative Study of Samples of Fry and Fingerlings of Major Carps from the River Old Brahmaputra at Mymensingh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A qualitative and quantitative study of samples of fry and fingerlings of major carps collected from natural spawning grounds of the river Old Brahmaputra at Mymensingh was made. Fry and fingerlings of 25 species of fishes including three species of major carps ( Catla catla, Lobea, rohita and Cirrhina mrigala) and two species of medium carps (Labeo calbasu and Cirrhina reba) have been obtained in the samples. The three major carps together constituted 37.73%, the two medium carps, 4.5%, and out 0f remaining 20 species of predatory and weed fishes, an unidentified species of the genus Puntius (Puntius sp.) alone constituted 48.54% of the total catch. The number of species represented in the catch as also the number of specimens representing a species have been found to have some relationship with the size of the carp fry as also with the occurrence of monsoon floods, both being greater in samples immediately following floods.

The objective of the present study was to find out the proportion of various species of major carps and also the various ( other) species in the catch at different times during the spawning season

Methodology:

Samples of fry and fingerlings were taken from frycollecing boats at Kewatkhali fish landing ghat near the Shambhuganj Railway Bridge on the river Old Brahmaputra. Samplings, Were at random and done conveniently on nine days during the period from 7 July 1974 to 4 August 1974, which was the peak period for fry collection that year. Size distribution of the three species of major carps namely C. catla, L. rohit a and C. mrigala collected on different dates was found out.

Achievement/Findings:

It will thus appear that for supply of unmixed and quality seeds of major carps the best thing to do would be to resort to induced spawning. Until a satisfactory technique of induced spawning of major carps has been developed to ensure a steady supply of the fingerlings of the desired species, the next best thing would be to collect fry and fingerlings and remove the undesirable species before they are released in the ponds. In case of spawns, it is essential that they be maintained in nursery ponds, instead of direct introduction . in the rearing and stocking ponds, for a time till they have attained a reasonable size making it possible to 'hand- pick' them thus eliminating the undesirable species
