Effaects of Leucaena Leucocephala Seed Meal on Ducks

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

NEEDS TO BE IMPROVED

Laying ducks consuming diets containing Leuceens leucocephala seed meal at different levels suffered from cataracts, retardation of growth, cessation of egg production and mortality. It was suggested that the toxic principle, mimosine has got neurotoxic effect and more work warrented.

Objectives:

To study the pathological effects of Leuceens seed meal in the duck (Anas platyrhyncha domestica) in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Dried seed samples of Leuceens were obtained from the Central Cattle Breeding Station at Savar in Dhaka and grounded in hammer mill (0.5 mm seive) and stored in air tight containers before use. 20 duck pullets (Khaki campbell varielv ); 10 male and 10 female have been purchased from the BAU duck farm and brought to laying. As soon as the flock established its egg prcductlon in full scale. birds were randomly devided Into two equal groups; 0 male and 5 female. The group received crushed Leuceens seed along wttn their. diet. regarded as experimental. On the other hand. control group raised .on conventional standard diet. The experimental group received seed meal at the rate of 5g in the first month, 20 gm in the second month, 20g in the third month. 40 g in the fourth month and 80 g in the fifth month twice daily after being incorporated in their diet. There had been one week transitional period from one trial to another. During experiment. both the groups have been subjected to clinical examination. Recording of body weight was performed fortnightly. Birds were kept in separate tin shed bedded with saw dust. Food and water were provided. Dead and live birds obtained during and after completion of the project, were autopsled and sacrificed. Tissues from different parts of the Gastro intestinal tract. liver. kidneys and spleen were collected and fixed in 10% buffered neutral formalin. Atter being processed through graded alcohol and xylene. btocks of tissues have been embedded in paraffin. Sections were cut at 6 micron thickness and stained with H & E for routine histopathotoqv.
