Evaluation of Pear (pyrus Communis L.) Germplasm at Jamalpur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The pomological and biochemical fruit characteristics as well as ecophysiological performance of a ten years old pear germplasm (PC Jam-001) was evaluated at RARS, Jamalpur during 2012-2013. The high and base girth of the pear tree was 7 m and 54 cm, respectively. The canopy spread larger in east-west (9.0 m) than north-south (7.8 m) direction. Flowering started on March-April and mature fruits were harvested from mid July. The harvest duration was recorded 10 days. Total numbers of fruits were 520 with average fruit weight of 183.0 g and each fruit having 3.5 seeds. The mesocarp thickness was found about 3.0 cm which indicate fleshy edible part of this pear fruit. Fruit cavity near peduncle was 1.42 cm long and 1.02 cm width. The yield per plant was 95.16 kg. Fruits quality were evaluated in terms of outside and inside flesh color, shape, texture, peel weight and total soluble sugars. Results indicated that fruit color of the accession was light green with brownish spot, rough surface and white flesh color. The size was pear shape with fruit length and breadth of 7.5 and 6.9 cm, respectively. The fruit has crispy texture having sweet taste with total soluble solids of 12.58%.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The study was carried out at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur during March to July, 2013. A ten years old pear plant was established at fruit orchard of RARS and used for taking the pomological, biochemical as well as ecophysiological fruit characteristics. The plants were fertilized with cow dung (20 kg), urea (250 g), TSP (250 g) and MoP (250 g) in two equal installments one is before onset of rainy season and another one is after rainy season. Besides this dose of fertilizer, the plants were fed with 200 g urea, 200 g TSP, 200 g MoP and 100 g boric acid at mid April 2014 for proper fruit growth. Light irrigation was given after fertilization in each installment. Irrigation was given at 15 days interval in the dry period (October to February). Dead and undesired branches were pruned after harvest of fruit in August. Before flowering the bunches were band for proper movement of flowering hormone. Data on plant height (m), base girth (cm), plant spreading on N-S and E-W direction (cm), growth condition of plants, branching density, time of blooming, time of harvesting, number of fruits/plant, fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit breadth (cm), number of seed/fruit, seed weight (g), mesocarp thickness (cm), cavity length (cm), cavity breadth (cm), skin weight (g), fruit yield/plant (kg), TSS (%), edible portion (%), fruit shape, fruit surface, skin color, flesh colour, crispiness and organoleptic taste were recorded as per IPGRI descriptors. The date were analyzed by Microsoft excel programme for interpretation the results properly.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the pomological, biochemical, as well as of ecophysiological characteristics of the pear accession, it can be conclude that the climatic condition of Bangladesh is suitable for pear cultivation. On the other hand considering growth, fruits/plant, fruit weight, yield TSS, edible portion and taste the pear germplasm PC Jam-001 was a promising germplasm and might be release as a variety.
