Performance of Grape (vitis Labrasck) in Hill Valley

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment on the evaluation of grape in the hill valley was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati Hill District during 2013-14. Ten cutting of a grape germplasm VL Rai-001 were planted during July, 2011at the hill valley of ARS, Raikhali, Rangamati and used for taking the pomological as well as ecophysiological characteristics of grape. During the fruiting time the plant produced 31 bunches. Each bunch contained 73.85 fruits. Single fruit weight, length and breadth were recorded 2.91 g, 1.7 and 1,53 cm, respectively. Each fruit restrained 2.20 seeds having 0.66 cm length and 0.41 cm breadth. Weight of 10 seeds was found 0.44 g. Fruit yield was 6.66 kg per vine with 80 % edible portion. TSS was 20% with very sweet organoleptic taste.

Objectives:

To study the performance of grape (VITIS labrasca) germplasm in Bangladesh

Evaluate, characterized and documented the pomological characteristics of grape

To select a suitable grape germplasm for release as a variety.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati Hill District during 2013-14. Ten grape vine of a grape germplasm VL Rai-001 were planted during July, 2011 at the hill valley of ARS, Raikhali, Rangamati and used for taking the pomological as well as ecophysiological characteristics of grape. Each of the pits was fertilized with 5 kg decomposed cowdung, 55 g P₂O₅, 75 g K₂O, 1 kg dolomite before transplanting. During 2013-14 vines were fertilized with 10 t decomposed cowdung, 500 kg N, 125 kg P and 750 kg K per hectare in two equal installments, first during the last week of February and the rest during initial stage of fruit development. Irrigation, pruning, training, weeding and other protection measures were applied as per requirement. Data on length of plant (m), base girth (cm), growth condition of plants, time of blooming, time of harvesting, number of bunch/plant, number of fruit/bunch, single fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit breadth (cm), number of seed/fruit, 10 seed weight (g), seed length (cm), seed breadth (cm), skin weight (g), yield/plant (kg), TSS (%), edible portion (%), fruit shape, fruit surface, skin color and organoleptic taste were recorded as per IPGRI descriptors. The data were analyzed by Microsoft excel programme for interpretation the results properly.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the pomological, biochemical, as well as of ecophysiological characteristics of the grape germplasm, it can be conclude that the climatic condition of Bangladesh is suitable for grape cultivation. Based on TSS, organoleptic taste and other parameters, the germplasm VL Rai-001 was found suitable in the hilly areas and might be release as a variety.
