A field experiment was carried out to study the growth and yield of inbred and hybrid rice in Boro season using mother plant and clonal tillers. The experiment consisted of two levels of treatment, viz. planting material and variety.  Results showed that the planting material significantly influenced all the studied characters such as panicle length, unfilled grains panicle -1, total grains panicle-1, 1000-grain weight, grain: straw ratio and harvest index. Mother plant showed better performance compared to that of clonal tillers. Significantly higher grain yield (6.85 t ha-1) and straw yield (6.45 t ha-1) were obtained from the mother plant, while the lowest grain yield (4.47 t ha-I) and straw yield (4.59 t ha-1) obtained from clonal tillers. Maximum biological yield (13.31 t ha-I) was also recorded from the mother plant, whereas the minimum (9.06 t ha-I) was from the clonal tillers. Variety had significant effect on all the agronomic parameters, except number of effective and ineffective tillers, total tillers, grain:straw ratio and biological yield. BRRI hybrid dhan2 produced the highest grain yield (5.92 t ha-1) but the lowest straw yield (4.97 t ha-I). Whereas, BRRI dhan29 produced the lowest grain yield (4.16 t ha-1) and the highest straw yield (6.70 t ha-1), The maximum harvest index (56.50 %) was found from BRAC aloron, while the lowest (37.67%) was from BRRI dhan29. The harvest index was 33.32% higher in BRAC aloron compared to that of BRRI dhan29. The interaction effect of planting material and variety showed a significant variation in tillers m-2, panicle length, unfilled grains panicle , total grains paniclel , 1000-grain weight, grain:straw ratio and harvest index. Clonal tillers had the potentiality to produce similar number of effective tillers m-2, grain wt. and harvest index to those of mother plant. However, the highest grain yield (7.80 t ha-I) was produced by the mother plant of hybrid variety Sonarbangla-6 and that was similar to that of the mother plant of BRRI hybrid dhan2 (7.67 t ha-1) and BRAC aloron (7.28 t ha-l).

To analyze a comparative performance of clonal and mother tillers as planting materials using inbred and hybrid rice during Boro season.

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka. Seeds were sown in the seedbed on December 04, 2008 for raising nursery seedlings and clonal tillers production. For nursery seedlings and clonal tillers treatments, 40 days old seedlings were uprooted carefully on January 14, 2009 and were kept in soft mud in shade. Seedlings were then transplanted on January 15, 2009 with 25 cm x 15 cm spacing on the well-puddled plots. In each plot, there were 14 rows, each row containing 20 hills of rice seedlings. All the hills of each plot having clonal tiller treatments were uprooted at 30 DAT, the clonal tillers were separated from each hills and those were then re-transplanted as per treatment having 2 clonal tillers per hill on 14 February, 2009. There were approximately 15 clonal tillers hill! at that stage. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications having planting material in the main plots and varieties in the sub-plot. There were 12 treatment combinations. The size of the unit plot was 3.5 m x 3.0 m. The distance between the plot to plot and replication to replication was 1 m. The experimental area was fertilized with 120, 35, 66, 20 and 5 kg ha-1 of N, P, K, S and Zn applied in the form of urea, triple super phosphate (TSP) , muriate of potash (MoP), gypsum and zinc sulphate, respectively. Ten pre-selected hills per plot from which different data were collected and from middle portion of each plot 6 m2 areas crop were separately harvested, bundled, tagged and then brought to the threshing floor for recording grain and straw yield. The grains were cleaned and sun dried to a moisture content of 14%. Straw was also sun dried properly. Finally grain and straw yields were determined and converted to ton ha-1. Data on yield attributes and other crop characters were. determined from randomly selected ten hills of each plot and grain and straw yields were recorded from the inner rows leaving border lines. The recorded data were statistically analyzed using the IRRISTAT computer package program. The mean differences among the treatments were compared by least significance difference (LSD) test at 5% level of significance.
