Relationships of Selected Personal and Social Characteristics of the Farmers with Their Adoption of Insect Control Measures

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The purpose of this study was to have an understanding of the extent of adoption of insect control measures by the farmers and its relationship with their three personal and three social characteristics. The personal characteristics included age, education and family labor while the selected social characteristics were cosmopolite ness, extension contact and organizational participation. Data were collected from a sample of 102 farmers of Khamar Union under Rajshahi district. Fifteen percent of the farmers did not adopt insect control measures while 25 percent had low adoption, 32 percent medium adoption and 28 percent high adoption. Age, education. family labor and cosmopolite ness of the farmers had no significant relationship with their adoption of insect control measures. Two of the social characteristics. namely. extension contact and organizational participation had positive relationship with the adoption of insect control measures.

Objectives:

1. To determine the extent of insect control measures by the farmers

Methodology:

Farmers of Khamar Union under Rajshahi district constituted the population of this study. There were 1,269 farmers in Khamar Union. However. data for this study were collected from a sample of 102 farmers selected by area sampling method. Data were collected from the farmers by interview procedure by using an interview schedule in Bengali. The collection of data took 33 days from January 5, 1974 to February 6, 1974. Adoption of insect control measures by the farmers was the dependent variable of this study. 1 he term, insect control referred to the use of measures as recommended by the Agricultural Extension Service to save crop plants from the damage by insects. Adoption of insect control measures, therefore, referred to one's use of Insect control measures and one's decision to conunue the Use In future. A score was computed for measuring the extent of adoption of insect control measures by each farmer. Thill score was based on two sub-scores, namely, time subs core and area subs core, Time subs core was computed on the basis of the length of us of insecticides for controlling insects. Weights assigned for different lengths of use or insecticides were: non-ac option or rejection - 0, 2 years or less - I, above 2 to 4 years - 2, above 4 to 6 years - 3, above 6 to 8 years - 4, and above 8 years - 5. Area subs core was computed on the basis of the percentage of area on which Insecucices were used in relation to the total insect affected area in 1973. Weights assigned for different percentages of area treated Were: 0 percent - 0, 1 to 20 percent - I, 21 to 40 percent - 2, 41 to c>0 percent - 3, 61 to 80 Percent 4, and 81 to 100 percent - 5. Score for adoption of insect control measures of a respondent was obtained by adding his time subs core and area subs core, each of which could range from 0 to 5. Therefore, scores for adoption of insect control measures could range from 0 to 10, zero indicating non- adoption of insect control measures and 10 very high adoption. Three personal characteristics and three social characteristics of the farmers were the independent variables of this study. The personal characteristics included age, education and family labor. The social characteristics included cosmopolite ness, extension contact and organizational participation, The procedures tor measuring these variables have been discussed along with the findings of the study. Chi-square method was used to examine the relationships of the selected characteristics of the farmers with their adoption of insect control measures.
