Influence of Harvesting Time on Yield and Yield Atiributes of Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during March 2007 to July 2007 to study the yield and yield attributes of mungbean varieties as affected by different harvesting time. The treatments were two mung bean varieties viz. BARI Mung-6 and Sona mung and five harvesting time viz. 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 days after anthesis (DAA). The varieties behaved differently at different harvesting times. Significantly higher seed yield (1.42 t ha^-1) was obtained from the high yielding variety (BARI Mung- 6) compared to the local variety (0.74 t ha^-1). Delayed harvesting (40 DAA) increased the seed yield of BARI Mung-6 but reduced the yield of Sona mung. The seed yield was 91.89% higher in the high yielding variety than the local variety. Seed yield of high yielding variety influenced only seed weight but pods/plant and seeds/pod showed higher in local variety. There was trend to increase seed yield up to harvesting 35 DAA buts pods/plant increased up to 30 DAA and seed weight 25 DAA irrespective of variety. Interaction between variety and harvesting time showed that delayed harvesting (40 DAA) gave maximum seed yield (1.66 t/ha) with BAR I Mung-6 which closely followed by 35 DAA (1.63 t/ha). Local variety revealed higher seed yield (0.91 t/ha) up to 30 DAA & then declined.

Objectives:

To study the yield and yield attributes of mungbean varieties as affected by different harvesting time

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy farm of Sher-e-Bangia Agricultural University, Dhaka during 27th March to 18th June 2007. During final land preparation, each unit plot was fertilized with 20, 18 and 29 kg/ha of N, P and K, respectively. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4.0 m x 2.4 m. Variety was assigned as the main plot and harvesting time as the sub-plot. The experiment was- comprised with two varieties viz. high yielding variety (BARI Mung-6) and local variety (Sona mung); and five harvesting times viz. picking of pods at 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 days after anthesis (DAA). The harvesting time was determined by counting the dates of first flowering. The seeds were sown by hand in 30 cm apart lines continuously at about 3 cm depth on March 27, 2007. The plots were weeded twice on 15 and 30 days after sowing and thinning was done simultaneously to maintain a uniform plant stand. The fungicide Cupravit 50 WP (Copper oxychloride) was sprayed @ 80g/5 decimal during the later stage of crop to control fungal diseases. Ten plants per plot were selected randomly from which different yield attributes data were collected. The crop was harvested as per experimental specification from central 4 rows for avoiding the boarder effects. The first harvesting of BARI Mung-6 was done on 21 May followed by 26 May, 31 May,5 June and 10 June respectively. The harvesting of Sona mung was started on 29 May followed by 3 June, 8 June, 13 June and 18 June respectively. The collected pods were sun dried, threshed and weighed to a control moisture level. The collected data were statistically analyzed and the mean values were compared by least significant difference (LSD) test.
