Performance of BRRI Dhan29 as Influenced by Nitrogen and Seedinngs Raised in Different Methods

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field of Sher-e Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during 2007-08 to study the performance of BRRI dhan29 in Boro season as influenced by N application and seedlings raised in different methods. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with 3 replications. Nitrogen application (N_O =No nitrogen, N₁= 2 splits at active tillering stage + at panicle initiation (PI) stage, N₂=3 splits at 1/3 at 15 DAT (Days after Transplanting)+ 1/3 active tillering stage + 1/3 at PI stage, N₃=3 splits at 1/3 at 15 DAT + 1/3 active tillering stage+ 1/3 at PI stage + additional 10 kg ha^-1 at flowering stage and N₄=Urea Super Granules, USG) were allocated in the main plots and seedling raising in different methods (S_l = normal seedling as produced using farmer's practices, S₂=seedling produced following BRRI recommendation and S₃= robust seedling from modified mat nursery) were assigned in sub- plots. Maximum grain yield (7.27 t ha^-1) was obtained from the USG (N₄₎ treated plot. However, 6.27 t ha^-1 was obtained from robust seedling by modified mat nursery plot. In interaction, USG with robust seedling from modified mat nursery produced the highest grain yield (7.84 t ha^-1) among the treatments.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of nitrogen application and seedlings raising in different methods on the performance of BRRI dhan29.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 under AEZ 28 during 2007 - 2008. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications. Nitrogen application method was assigned in the main plot and seedlings raising in different methods in the sub-plots. The unit plot size was 4m x 2.5 m. Five N application levels, viz. N_o = no nitrogen (control), N_l= 2 splits at active tillering stage + at (pI) stage, N₂= 3 splits at 1/3 at 15 DAT + 1/3 at active tillering stage + 1/3 at (PI) stage), N₃ = 3 splits at1/3 at 15 DAT + 1/3 at active tillering stage + 1/3 at (PI) stage + additional 10 kg N ha^-1at flowering stage, N₄ = Urea Super Granules (USG) and three types of seedling raising in different methods, viz. S_I= Normal seedling (produced following farmers' practices), S₂= Seedling produced as recommended by BRRI, S₃= Robust seedling from modified mat nursery were the treatments. The fertilizers N, P, K, Sand Zn in the form of urea, TSP, MoP, Gypsum and Zinc sulphate, respectively were applied @ 270, 130, 120, 60, 10 kg ha^-1(BRRI, 2000). The TSP, MOP, Gypsum and Zinc sulphate were applied during the final land preparation. Urea was applied as per treatment. USG (46% N, made from International Fertilizer Development Corporation (IFDC) weighing 2.7 g each were placed 5-8 cm deep at 9 DAT in the centre of four hills in alternate rows at 80 kg USG ha^-1. Transplanting was done on 08 January, 2008 using 36 days old of normal, and BRRI recommended seedling and 18 days old seedling from modified mat nursery. Seedlings were transplanted in lines following line to line distance 25 cm and hill to hill distance 15 cm, respectively. The crop was harvested manually from each plot on 06 May, 2008. The collected data were analyzed following statistical methods. Mean among the treatments were tested by LSD (0.05) (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

It may be concluded that N₄S₃ treatment (USG robust seedling from modified mat nursery) performs better in terms of yield (7.84 t ha^-1),gross return (Tk.157300.00/ha), gross margin (Tk.109870.00/ha) and BCR (3.31) than the other treatments.
