Evaluation of Hydrogeologic Properties of Aquifer in Mymensingh Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An Investigation was carried out for evaluating the hydrogeologic properties of the aquifer in the south-western part of Mymensingh district. From the litholo-gical study based on the existing well logs, it is found that the upper layer of soil in the entire study area contains clay from 0 to a depth of 46 metre of the ground surface. Fine sand layer extends from a depth of 21 m to about 49 m below the ground surface which has an average thickness of about 4 5 rn, Medium sand is found in this region to a depth ranging from 26-82 m. Coarse sand layer mixed with gravel and medium sand exists upto a maximum depth of above 122 m. This layer can be characterised as a good aquifer which has a potentiality of abstracting groundwater. The aquifer properties of the study area namely. the coefficients of transmissivity (T) and storage (5) were determined using the Thiem equilibrium method, the Jacob's modified non-equilibrium method. and the Time-recovery method based on the available pumping test data of production wells. The average values of transmissivity of the aquifer based on these methods were found to vary from 4600-10600 m²/day, 2670- 5300 m²/days, and 2100-6100 m²/day, respectively. The average values of storage coefficient (S) for the selected locations ranged from 0.C054 to 0.0071.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Available pumping test data of production wells were used to determine the aquifer properties. With slight modifications and certain reasonable approximations, the Thiem's equilibrium method, Jacob's modified non-equilibrium method and Time-recoverv method were used for determining the aquifer properties.
