Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in Cotton Research, Training and Seed Multiplication Farm, Sreepur, Gazipur during June 2006 to March 2007 to find out the yield and quality of six cotton genotypes as affected by population density. Five short duration and short statured cotton genotypes, viz. NAM-77 , C-2602, BC-0342, BC-0406 and CB-IO along with cultivar CB-9 were evaluated to find out the maximum yield potential in three different spacing, viz. 90cm x 45cm (24692 plants ha^-1), 75cm x 45cm (29630 plants ha^-1) and 60cm x 45cm (37037 plants ha^-1). Maximum seed cotton yield 2.93 ton ha^-1 was recorded when the spacing was 75cm x 45cm for all the genotypes. The lowest cotton yield (0.96 ton ha^-1) was obtained in genotype C-2602 with 90 cm x 45 cm spacing.

Objectives:

To examine the various plant population effects on their yield, quality and maturity in Sreepur areas of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The field experiment was carried out at Cotton Research, Training and Seed Multiplication Farm, Sreepur, Gazipur during 15th June of kharif season in 2007 to find out the yield and quality of six cotton genotypes as affected by population density. The experimental plot belongs to the sub- tropical climatic condition of Madhupur Tract (AEZ 28). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications having two factors viz. six genotypes (NAM-77, C-2602, BC-0342, BC-0406, CB-I0 and CB-9) and three spacing Sl = 90 cm x 45 cm (24692 plants ha^-1), S2 = 75 cm x 45 cm (29630 plants ha^-1) and S3 = 60 cm x 45 cm (37037 plants ha^-1. The unit plot size was 3.6 m x 2.25 m. Management practices were done properly. The recorded data on various parameters of the crop were statistically analyzed and treatments means were compared by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

Maximum seed cotton yield 2.93 ton ha^-1 was recorded when the spacing was 75cm x 45cm for all the genotypes. The lowest cotton yield (0.96 ton ha^-1) was obtained in qenotype C-2602 with 90 cm x 45 cm spacing at Sreepur. Early maturing genotypes had narrow canopy coverage and found to produce higher yield in June 15 sowing at closer spacing (75 cm x 45 cm) than recommended spacing (90cm x 45 cm).
