An investigation was carried out to study the performance of growth, yield and quality of dragon fruit at RHRS, Shibpur, Narsingdi. Plant height was recorded 80.1cm after 1 month of planting and it continues to grow 274.2 cm after 10 months on 2nd May, 2014. Number of segments per plant varied 2-3 after 2 months of planting and it was 4.0 after 11 months. After two months of planting the side segments was started to initiate and after 11 months of planting number of side segments was 5 to 7 with 6.7 cm long. Study on floral biology revealed that flower initiation took place after 11 months of planting on 1st May 2014 and it took 35 days to full bloom. Antheses was happened on 27 May 2014. The length of flower was 23 cm long. Number of calyx per flower was 57 and number of petals 14. Numerous yellow coloured anthers were arranged below the stigma which favoured cross pollination. Petals were attractive white in colour. Fruit was harvested on 5th July 2014. Average weight of fruit was 322 g. Fruit length was 10.4 cm while fruit breadth was 9.8 cm. Edible portion was 84.08 % with 13% TSS.

To study the growth, yield and fruit characteristics of dragon fruit germplasm at Narsingdi

To study the performance of dragon fruit germplasm in Shibpur, Narsingdi

Evaluate, characterized and documented the physico morphological characteristics of dragon fruit

The study was carried out at Regional Horticulture Research Station, Shibpur, Narsingdi to find out the growth behaviour of dragon and performance of fruit during June 2013 to August 2014. Initially eight saplings of dragon fruit were collected from Comilla and planted with a spacing of 2 ´ 2 m during June 2013. Before planting the individual pit was fertilized by 15 kg well decomposed cowndung, 300 g TSP and 250 g MoP. After one month of planting, 100 g of urea was applied at an interval of 3 months. The plants were supported individually by RCC pillar (7.5 ft height) which was placed adjacent to the plant maintaining the pillar height 6 feet above the ground level and 1.5 feet underground. A motorcycle tyre was placed at the top of each pillar which supports the vine for hanging. At peak ripeness, the fruit become pink-red, although the scales remain green and the fruits were harvested for recorded the data. Data on plant height (m), base girth (cm), segment/plant, date of secondary segment initiation, number of segment/plant, stem structure, phase of flowering, date of floral bud appearance, days required for full bloom, days to harvest from flowered bud appearance, time of full bloom, length of flower (cm), number of calyx/flower, number of petals/flower, number of anther/flower, colour of petal, colour of anther, number of fruit/plant, single fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit breadth (cm), rind weight (g), rind colour, flesh colour, seed colour, seed number, TSS (%), edible portion (%), fruit shape, apparance, organoleptic taste, yield/plant (kg) and insect-diseases infestation were recorded as per IPGRI descriptors. The date were analyzed through simple statistics for interpretation the results properly. The data on growth parameters were collected at 30 days interval.

The study also revealed that the agro-climatic condition of Narsingdi is suitable for dragon fruit cultivation. The dragon fruit germplasm exhibited better performance might be recommended for cultivation under Narsingdi region.
