Collection and Evaluation of Strawberry (fragaria × Ananassa Duch.) Germplasm at BARI, Gazipur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Six strawberry germplasm collected from home and abroad were evaluated at HRC, BARI, Gazipur during August 2013 to April 2014. First flowering of all the germplasm under study took place between early December to mid December. The germplasm FA-007 and FA-017 were flowered at mid December and rest of the germplasm flowered at early December. First harvesting of the germplasm started between last December to mid January. Harvesting period varied from 75 to 105 days. The wider harvest duration was recorded from FA-016 and shorter from FA-007. The heaviest fruits were produced by FA-007 (37.5 g) followed by FA-017 (37.2 g) while the lightest fruit was found in BARI Strawberry-1 (25.2 g). Maximum number of fruits per plant (30) was obtained from FA-005 and the minimum (17) from FA-007. The highest fruit yield per plant (825.0 g) was recorded from FA-005 followed by FA-006 (710.6 g) and the lowest from BARI Strawberry-1 (529.2 g). TSS was highest (11.1%) in BARI Strawberry-1 followed by FA-007 (10.5%) and FA-017 (10.5%) while it was lowest (10.0%) in FA-006 and FA-016. Considering yield and quality of fruit FA-005, FA-006, FA-007, FA-016 and FA-017 were found promising under the climatic condition of Gazipur.

Objectives:

To study the performance of strawberry germplasm in BARI, Gazipur

Evaluate, characterized and documented the physico morphological characteristics of strawberry

To select a suitable strawberry germplasm for release more strawberry varieties.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur, during November 2013 to April 2014. Five germplasm of strawberry viz FA-005, FA-006, FA-007, FA-016 and FA-017 collected from home and abroad were included in this study and BARI Strawberry-1 used as check. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block (RCB) Design with 3 replications. The unit plot consisted of a single raised bed of 2.5 m X 1 m size accommodating 10 plants in double row system with 50 cm x 50 cm plant spacing. The runners of strawberry plant were planted in November 04, 2013. The land was fertilized with decomposed cow dung, Urea, TSP, and MP @ 75 ton, 650 kg, 500 kg and 600 kg per hectare respectively. All the cow dung, TSP and half of MP fertilizer were applied during bed preparation. Total Urea and rest of MP were applied 20 days interval at 5 equal splits from 15 days after planting. Straw mulch was used to minimize soil temperature, conserve soil moisture, control weeds and keep the fruits off the soil. Flood irrigation was applied after fertilizer application and during drought period. Runners of strawberry plants were removed 2/3 days after emergence. Weeding, spraying of insecticides and fungicides were done as and when necessary. Fully ripe fruits were harvested and data on Time of first flowering, time of first harvesting, duration of harvesting (day), fruit weight, (g), fruit length (cm), fruit Breadth (cm), fruit Number/plant, yield/ plant (g) and TSS (%) were recorded and the mean data were presented after analyzing following standard statistical procedures.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering flowering, fruit size, single fruit weight, fruits/plant yield and TSS of fruits FA-005, FA-006 and FA-007 were found promising under the climatic condition of Gazipur and might be release as strawberry varieties.
