Qualitative Fruit Characteristics of Strawberry (fragaria × Ananassa Duch.) Germplasm at BARI, Gazipur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Five Strawberry germplasm collected from different parts of Bangladesh and abroad along with BARI Strawberry-1 were evaluated on the basis of qualitative fruit characteristics at the Fruit Research Farm, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during August 2013 to April 2014. The qualitative characteristics of strawberry germplasm exhibited a wide variation. All the strawberry germplasm produced solitary flowers while BARI Strawberry-1 produced branched inflorescences. Fruit size varied among the germplasm. There were very large fruits found in FA-005, FA-006, FA-007, FA-016 and FA-017, while BARI Strawberry-1 produced small fruits. Fruit shape of the strawberry germplasm were different types. The germplasm FA-005 produced Conic shape fruits, FA-006 and FA-016 produced fruits in Long Wedge shape, FA-007 and FA-017 produced Long Conic fruits, while BARI Strawberry-1 produced fruits having Globose Conic shape. Most of the germplasm produced fruits in orange red colour but BARI Strawberry-1 produced fruits in deep red colour. Juiciness of fruits varied among the germplasm and it was very juicy (BARI Strawberry-1) to juicy (FA-005, FA-006, FA-007, FA-016 and FA-017) fruits. Almost all the strawberry germplasm produced sweet fruits in taste except BARI Strawberry-1, it produced soury sweet fruit. Most of the germplasm produced fruits of distinct excellent strawberry flavour.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The qualitative fruit characteristics of six strawberry germplasm were studied at the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur, during November 2013 to April 2014. Five germplasm of strawberry viz. FA-005, FA-006, FA-007, FA-016 and FA-017 collected from home and abroad were included in the experiment and BARI Strawberry-1 used as check. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block (RCB) Design with 3 replications. The unit plot consisted of a single raised bed of 2.5 X 1.0 m size accommodating 10 plants in double row system with 50 cm x 50 cm plant spacing. The runners of strawberry plant were planted in November 04, 2013. The land was fertilized with decomposed cow dung, Urea, TSP, and MP @ 75 ton, 650 kg, 500 kg and 600 kg per hectare respectively. All the cow dung, TSP and half of MP fertilizer were applied during bed preparation. Total Urea and rest of MP were applied 20 days interval at 5 equal splits from 15 days after planting. Straw mulch was used to minimize soil temperature, conserve soil moisture, control weeds and keep the fruits off the soil. Flood irrigation was applied after fertilizer application and during drought period. Runners of strawberry plants were removed 2/3 days after emergence. Weeding, spraying of insecticides and fungicides were done as and when necessary. Data on inflorescence type, fruit size, fruit shape, fruit colour, juiciness, organoleptic taste, flavor and shelf life were collected as per IPGRI descriptors for proper interpretation the results.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering fruit size, shape, colour, juiciness, flavor and organoleptic taste the germplasm FA-006 was identical with FA-016, on the other hand the germplasm FA-007 was identical with FA-017.
