Evaluation of Strawberry (fragaria × Ananassa Duch.) Germplasm at NARSingdi

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four strawberry germplasm were tested at RHRS, Narsingdi during August 2013 to March 2014. Different strawberry germplasm showed variation among themselves in case of various plant and fruit characteristic. The days to first flowering was recorded in BARI Strawberry-1 at the end of the November and it was first January for rest of the genotypes. Number of leaves per plant varied from 12 to 16. Maximum leaf size was the highest (22.19 x 8.243 cm) in FA Nar-76. Fruit/plant was found maximum (24.67) in FA Nar-77 and minimum (19.67) in BARI Strawberry-1. Maximum fruit length x breadth (7.0 x 10.70 cm) were obtained from FA Nar-76 which was statistically identical with BARI Strawberry-1. The heaviest fruit (25.63 g) was obtained from FA Nar-76 and the lightest (9.63 g) was recorded from FA Nar-77. The highest TSS (10.03%) was recorded in FA Nar-77 and the lowest (6.52%) in FA Nar-75. The highest yield of strawberry (7.83 kg/plot and 24.61 t/ha) was recorded in FA Nar-76, while the lowest (2.84 kg/plot and 9.48 t/ha) in FA Nar-77 In response of organolaptic tested ranking and scoring FA Nar- 76 was not accepted germplasm followed by FA Nar-77 and BARI Strawberry-1.

Objectives:

To study the performance of strawberry germplasm at RHRS, Narsingdi

Evaluate, characterized and documented the physico morphological characteristics of strawberry

To select suitable strawberry germplasm for release as varieties.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Regional Horticulture Research Centre, Shibpur, Narsingdi during August 2013 to March 2014. Three strawberry germplasm viz. FA Nar-75, FA Nar-76, FA Nar-77 were studied under this experiment with BARI Strawberry-1 as a check. The trail was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The unit plot consisted of 15 cm raised bed of 3 m × 1 m size accommodating 12 plants in double row system with 50 × 40 cm spacing. The runners of strawberry were planted on 10 November 2013. The land was fertilized with Cowdung, Urea, TSP, MOP, Gypsum, Zinc sulphate, Borax @ 20000, 175, 150, 100, 12 and 10 kg/ ha, respectively. Entire Cowdung, TSP, Gypsum, Zinc sulphate, Borax and 1/3 rd of MOP were applied in 3 equal splits 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. Weeding, irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The transplanted seedlings were always kept under careful observation. Netting intercultural operations were performed for better growth and development of the plants during the period of the experiment. As strawberry is a temperature sensitive crop, so during cropping period partial shading was provided through provided nylon shade net. Data on different parameters related to the experiment such as number of leaves/plant, leaf length (cm), leaf breadth (cm), number of fruits/plant, number of fruits/plot, individual fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit breath (cm), weight of fruits/plant (g), weight of fruits/plot (kg), TSS of fruit (%) and yield (t/ha) were recorded and statistically analyzed with MSTATC program.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering fruit size, fruit weight and fruit yield, FA Nar-76 was found to superior among the strawberry but the taste was not expectable.
