Seeds of flash flood tolerant entry Swarna Subl, received from lRRl, multiplied by tiller separation techniques during 2005. The grain yield of the line was 4.15 t ha-1 under non- submerged normal condition. The grain yield was higher than that of Swarna (recurrent) (3.88 tha-1). Moreover, new Subl entry BRll Subl was received in 2007, multiplied seeds during 2007-08 and delivered to GO and NGOs. The submergence tolerant entry BRll Subl showed higher seedling height (27 cm) than that of Swarna Subl (23cm). Swarna Subl and BRll Subl showed survival percentage of 97 and 90% in 12 days submerged condition. However, that decreased to 22-23%. when the submergence increased to 16 days. Swarna Subl showed 50% flowering on 10 October in non- submergence condition but it was 13 and 16 days later (23 and 26 October) for 12 and 16 days submergence conditions, respectively. Contrary, BRll Subl, under submergence, flowered on October 7, i.e. 17 and 19 days later for 12 and 16 days submergence conditions than non-submergence condition. Growth duration increased by 17 and 29 days due to 12 days submergence, while that were 20 and 32 days due to 16 days submergence in Swarna Subl and Swarna(ck}, respectively. Similarly, the duration increased by 18 and 22 days due to 12 days submergence, and by 20 and 32 days due to 16 days submergence in BRll Subl and BRll (ck) , respectively. BRll Sub1 was selected through voting system as the best material by the participating farmers followed by Swarna Sub1 under 12- and 16 days submerged condition in Aman 2008.

To evaluate the performance of Sub 1 entries of rice under flash flood submerged situation.

Bangladesh Rice Research Institute ,Regional Station, Rangpur (North West Bangladesh) received only 150g seeds of Swarna Sub1 from IRRI, Philippines through BRRI-lRRI collaboration in 2005. The seeds of Swarna Sub1 entry were multiplied by following tiller separation technique during T. Aman season of 2005 and 2006. Tiller separation is a process by which tillers were split off from the main plant of rice hill and then replanted in a new area. A second and third transplantation was made from the original split off plants in order to get more area coverage for getting good amount of seeds from the limited seed stock. The treatments were: Tl= Normal TPR and no tiller separation done, T2= Normal TPR and had tiller separation, T3= TPR with 2-3 separated tillers from T2, T4= TPR with 2-3 separated tillers from T2 but had tiller re-separation and T5= TPR with 2-3 re-separated tillers from T4. The seeds of Swarna Sub1 were soaked on 8 different dates to grow different age of seedlings in various methods. All the seedlings were transplanted on 28 July 2007 in normal condition. The submergence tolerant variety Swarna Sub1 and BR11 (ck) were evaluated at BRRl Regional Station, Rangpur experimental farm in two methods, such as dry DSR and TPR. The trial crop natural recourse management (CNRM) options for recovery of T Aman rice after submergence was conducted in control condition at BRR! Regional Station, Rangpur experimental farm during T Aman 2006. A mother trial under PVS was conducted in controlled submergence condition at BRRI Regional Station, Rangpur experimental farm, CURE key site Rangpur under BMGF through BRRHRRI collaboration in order to observe the performance of Sub1 materials for adoption in submergence- prone areas in northern Bangladesh. Four Sub1 entries such as Swarna Sub1, BR11 Sub1, IR64 Sub1, and Samba Mashuri Sub1 along with 2 checks as Swarna and BR11 established in two independent tanks for 12 and 16 days submergence and one set in normal field condition for non- submergence (ck) in T. Aman, 2008. Preference analysis was organized on-station and on-farm at booting/flowering stage and maturity stage during Aman 2008. BRRI Principal Agricultural Economist along with Plant Breeder, Agronomists, DAE and SCA personnel, NGOs and farmers visited on-station PVS mother trials of Sub l entries at Rangpur in 12d and 16d submergence conditions for preference analysis during Aman, 2008.

Swarna Sub1 in 9 farmer's field produced average grain yield of4.58 tha-1 under non-submerged conditions. The yield decreased to 3.92 t ha-1 when the crop was submerged for 2-7 days, 3.25 t ha-1 for 8-10 days and 3.11 t ha-1 for 11-14 days. The grain yield decreased with the increasing submergence frequency, such as 15% for one time, 18% for two times and 23% for three times submergence than non-submerged crop. Most of the farmers opined that Swarna Sub1 had tolerant capacity to flash flood submergence for a certain period of 7-14 days and produced higher yield in both submergence and control conditions.
