Effect of Clump Planting on the Growth and Yield of Banana (musa Sp)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was made on the performances of clump planting of Amritasagar banana (Musa sp) at the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Clump planting of 2 or 3 plants in each pit was thought to be helpful to stand collectively against strong winds and storms. The results showed that the clump planting was deleterious to plant growth and yield. Clump plantings of three suckers in spacings of 2x2m and 4x3m produced tallest plants of 265.00 and 271.80 cm respectively while the height of single plantings in both the spacings were 220.50 and 215.00. A reverse trend was found among the treatments in producing higher girth of pseudostem. Heavy bunches of 15-15.20 kg were obtained in single plants of both the spacings while the total weight of bunches in a clump of 2 or 3 was less than that of single plant in a pit. The plants in a clump took longer crop period of even upto 17 months. There were greater incidence of insects and diseases in the clump plantings and the quality of the produce was also inferior. Thus, the clump planting was found to be unsuitable for normal production.

Objectives:

To investigate the effect of clump planting on the growth and yield of Amritasagar banana.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Sword suckers of Amritasagar were planted from 4 October 1982. There were 2 spacings e.g 2x2m and 4x3m; in the pits of each spacing, there were single, double and triple suckers. Thus, two or three plants in one pit made a clump of banana plants. In total there were six treatments.The plot size was 8x6m which facilitated 12 pits or clumps at 2x2m spacing and 4 pits or clumps at 4x3m spacing. The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design. A single plant(s) in one pit was(were) taken as the unit for a treatment in a replication. Cultural practices and fertilizer applications were done as per recommendations. The data on the plant characteristics, time of shooting, time of harvesting and bunch characters were recorded during the crop period and after harvest. The results were analysed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that the plants in the clump were more subjected to infestations of banana leaf and fruit beetle, stem-boring weevil; and in some cases diseases. To control them with spraying of chemicals was difficult. Again, it was not easy to keep the plantation neat and clean. It may be concluded from the above discussion that the clump planting is deleterious for the commercial production of Amritasagar banana and it neither protects the crop from wind damage nor it maintains a normal productivity of the crop.
