Effect of Different Rootstock on the Growth and Yield of Mandarin

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted on the effect of different rootstocks like rough lemon, rangpur lime, calamansi and pummelo on the growth and yield of BARI Kamala-1 at hill valley of Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati during 2013-14. The results on the effects of different root stocks like rough lemon, rangpur lime, calamansi and pummelo on the growth and yield of BARI Kamala-1 were studied. The highest plant height (175.00 cm) was observed in rough lemon used as rootstock for BARI Kamla-1 and the lowest (95.00 cm) in pummelo. Similarly, maximum base girth (16.00 cm) and minimum base girth (9.00 cm) were recorded in rough lemon and pummelo, respectively. Maximum plant canopy (116.67 cm × 110.00 cm) was observed in rough lemon and minimum (45.00 × 65.00 cm) in pummelo. Hundred percent survival rate was found in rough lemon, rangpur lime and calamansi but reduced to 60% in pummelo. The incidence of disease was higher in pummelo as compared to lower in calamansi. The moderate incidence of disease was found in rough lemon and rangpur lime.

Objectives:

To study the effect of root-stock on grafting success of mandarin

To observe the performance of different root-stock on the growth and yield of mandarin

To select suitable root-stock for mandarin cultivation

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati Hill District during 2013-14. The buds of BARI Kamala-1 grafted on to different root-stocks like Rough lemon, Rangpur lime, Calamansi and Pummelo were used for this experiment.

Hence there were four treatments such as

BARI Kamala-1 grafted on to Rough lemon

BARI Kamala-1 grafted on to Rangpur lime

BARI Kamala-1 grafted on to Calamansi and

BARI Kamala-1 grafted on to Pummelo.

The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. Five grafts were planted for each replication. Grafts were planted in August 2011 maintaining spacing of 4 × 4 m. Manures and fertilizers were applied @ 15 kg cowdung, 150 g K₂O, 230 g P₂O₅ and 1 kg dolomite per pit were applied before transplanting. Cowdung 15 kg, 140 g N, 70 g P₂O₅, 120 g K₂O per tree in two equal installments in a year were applied for proper growth and development. First installment was applied during February and the last during October. Data on growth parameters were taken and statistically analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on growth, plant survival percentage, disease incidence and leaf minor infestation rough lemon and calamansi were found as superior rootstock for BARI Kamala-1 and might be recommended for propagation of mandarin.
