Seasonal Changes in the Ovary of Gudusia Chapra (ham.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study on the histology and annual cyclic changes in the ovaries of Gudusia chapra (Ham.) revealed that the oocyte development of this fish occurs in six stages: oogonia, previtellogenic oocytes, yolk precursor, non-staining yolk, red-staining yolk, and completion of development and the ovarian cycle passes through five stages

Objectives:

To determine the present study deals with the morphohistology and annual cyclic changes in the ovarian activity to confirm the breeding season of G. chapra.

Methodology:

A total of 2336 fish specimens was examined twice a month from the ponds of Jahangirnagar University Campus during November 1993 to October 1995. The fishes were caught by cast and seine nets. After collection, the ovaries were dissected out, checked for maturity stage and then weighed to the nearest 0.01 g. The gonads were fixed immediately and subsequently processed in Bouin's fluid for histological preparation in the laboratory. The routine technique was used for sectioning the tissues, which were cut at a thickness of 6 microns, and stained in Hiedenhani's haemotoxylin and eosin.
