An experiment on time (February, March, April and May) and method (cleft, splice and veneer) of grafting in Indian olive was conducted at HRC, BARI, Gazipur, during 2012-2013. Veneer took more time (22.75 DAG) than other methods. The cleft showed maximum success (79.17 %) at 30 DAG followed by Splice (76.25 %). Veneer grafting had minimum (46.67 %) success.  Cleft showed maximum graft survivability at 60 and 90 DAG (72.08 and 72.08 %, respectively), while minimum (41.67 and 46.67 %, respectively) in veneer. Maximum shoot length (22.22 cm), leaves/graft (17.25) and shoots/graft (3.29) were obtained from splice, whereas minimum (18.67 cm, 12.58 and 2.33, respectively) in veneer. The highest shoot diameter (0.51 cm) was registered in cleft, while the lowest (0.44 cm) in veneer. Earlier bud break (17.33 DAG) was found in May, compared to April (21.67 DAG). Grafting success at 30, 60 and 90 DAG were recorded higher (82.22, 76.11 and 76.11%, respectively) in May compared to lower (50.56, 47.78 and 47.78 %, respectively) in February. Maximum shoot length (24.27 cm), shoot diameter (0.55 cm), number of leaves/graft (18.01) and number of shoots/graft (3.58) were recorded in March, whereas minimum (16.44, 0.40 cm, 13.56 and 2.22, respectively) in February.

To find out the effect of method and time of grafting on success, survival and growth of Indian olive.

To select suitable method and time of grafting in Indian olive

The study the effect of time and method of grafting in Indian olive propagation.

The experiment was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during 2012-2013. The experiment consisted of three methods of grafting viz., cleft, splice and veneer, and four different time of grafting viz., February, March, April and May. The two factor experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Thus there were (4×3) 12 treatment combinations. Ten grafts were prepared in each replication. A total number of 360 (12 × 3 × 10) grafts were prepared in the first week of February to May, 2013. The seedlings of local Indian olive were raised in 20´15 cm polybags filled with a mixture of silt and compost in equal proportion. Scion of Indian olive with about 8-10 cm long was used in this experiment. The grafting was done on the same day of scion collection in each month. The grafting operation was done with a sharp knife on the rootstocks of about 10-15 cm above the soil level. Grafting tape was used to tie the grafts. The grafts were covered with polythene bags, which promoted the retention of high humidity within the bag up to the union of grafts and prevented the drying out of the bud wood. The prepared grafts were kept under partial shade in the mist house.  The polythene covering was removed after bud break when 4-5 leaves were appeared on the grafts. The grafting tape was removed when the grafts were confirmed. Data in respect of days to bud break, per cent graft success (30 DAG), survivability (60 DAG and 90 DAG)), shoot length, shoot diameter, number of leaves per graft and number of shoots per graft at 90 DAG were recorded and analyzed statistically.
