Effects of Time and Sowing Method on Growth, Yield and Biochemical Composition of Tomato (lycopersicon Esculentu.m Var. Roma)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Plant height and number of leaves, first flowering and fruiting were maximum in plants obtained from directly sowing in November. Directly sown plants of November gave maximum number of total fruits and total weight of fruits per plant and highest average weight of single fruit. Ash content was maximum in fruits of directly sown plants of October. First ripening of fruits and maximum moisture and protein content in ripe fruits together with non-protein nitrogen (NPN)" in green fruits were observed higher in directly sown November plants. Ascorbic acid and fat content was maximum in green fruits of directly sown and transplanted plants of November.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of time and sowing method on growth, yield and biochemical composition of tomato fruits.

Methodology:

Healthy tomato seeds (three/pot) and seedlings of one months old (one/pot) were sown directly and transplanted, respectively in 20 earthen pots (23 cm x 25.5 cm) during the months of October, November and December separately. The pot was filled up with eight kilogram of soil thoroughly mixed with basic fertilizers. Finally one plant was kept in directly sown pots. Each plant of every pot was suported by one bamboo stick for normal growth. The pots were kept in four rows, each row contains five pots. The arrangements were restructured periodically to eliminate position effect of light an:d air on the plants. Agronomic data were recorded at different stages of growth. Ash, ascorbic acid, moisture and crude fat were determined according to standard procedure of AOAC. Non-protein-nitrogen (NPN) and protein content were measured by Kjedahl method. Temperature was recorded throughout the experiment.

Achievement/Findings:

Highest ash content was recorded in green fruits of directly sown October plants followed by November and December ones. Ash content of ripe fruits of all the batches was less than the green fruits Decreased ash content during ripening period was also reported. Moisture content in ripe fruits and protein content of both green and ripe fruits were optimum in plants of November followed by October and December. However, very little differences were observed previously between directly sown and transplanted plants. Ripe fruits contain more protein than green fruits in all the batches. Protein content of green and ripe fruits from directly sown November plants increased by 14.93 and 17.15% over transplanted one and is in good agreement with the findings of Begum. NPN content was also found maximum in directly sown November plants and was always highest in green fruits. Green fruits contained higher fat and ascorbic acid than ripe fruits in all the batches. The increased fat in green fruits agreed with the results of Alekseev et al . and Fattah and Hassan.
