Effect of Raising White Leghorn Layers Under Floor System and Bamboo Made Colony Cages

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted with 60 White Leghorn Layers of 26 weeks of age in Bangladesh Agricultural University Poultry Farm to compare the effect of Bamboo made colony cages and also conventional litter floor on body weight, egg production, egg size, feed efficiency and mortality of White Leghorn laying hens. Egg production was higher ( 44.97% ) on the floor housed birds than those housed in cages ( 35.00%). The average egg weight of cage housed was significantly heavier than that of floor housed birds. Floor housed birds required 86.39 gms less feed to produce per unit of eggs. The mortality rate was 10% on the floor housed birds.

Objectives:

To compare the performances of pullets reared in individual cages, colony cages and on floor pens in egg production and mortality.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with randomly selected 60 White Leghorn pullets of 20 weeks old which were divided into two groups having 3 replications in each group. One of the groups of the experimental birds was kept in floor and the other group was kept in bamboo made colony cages. The bamboo made colony cages were 1.2m long, 0.6m wide and 0.6m high. Floor space was 1.2 X O.6m = O.72 m²^. The conventional floor was provided with litter ( sand ) of about 15 cm depth. Experimental birds were provided with identical care and management and they were supplied with ration consisting of locally available feed ingredients. For obtaining desired objectives, daily egg production record, daily egg weight. daily mortality record, weekly feed consumption record and initial and monthly body weight record were kept separately for each lot during the experimental period. Experiment was designed as completely randomized design ( C. R. D.). Data collected were analyzed statistically for finding out differences between two groups.

Achievement/Findings:

It was found that the average feed consumption per bird to produce per unit of egg was highest in cages (1: 358.6 gms ) and lowest on floor (I: 272.2 gms). This variation of feed efficiency of the two groups were analyzed statistically and the result was highly significant. The percentage of mortality was higher on floor (20%) than in cages ( 10%). The total number and percentage of culled birds between two groups were same. To test significance of differences in mortality of the two groups, Chi-square analysis method was used.
