Screening of World Germplasm of Okra (abelmoschus Esculentus L.) for Resistance to Yellow Vein Mosaic Virus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Whitefly transmitted Yellow Vein Mosaic (YVM) virus is the most destructive disease of okra in Asian countries. A search for a source of resistance was made in a world germplasm collection of cultivated okra. From 29 countries, 301 accessions were tested in six sowings. Accessions numbering 18 from Ivory Coast, 5 from Ghana and 1 from Liberia remained unaffected in every sowing. A bout 15 thousand plants of these 24 accessions have been raised up to now, but none was infected. On the other hand, plants of all other accession grown side by side in the same field were heavily infected, the extent of infection being 90-100%. Several unusual types of wild okra collected from hilly areas were also susceptible. Attempt was made to infect the resistant lines through grafting Resistant plants (scion) were contact grafted with susceptible infected stock. Also buds of resistant plants were grafted on infected plants. These buds later sprouted and developed into full plants; but in both contact and bud-grafting, the resistant plants remained healthy although they continued to grow on infected plants.

Objectives:

To screen the okra germplasm against yellow vein mosaic virus

Methodology:

The accessions of okra, screened in this experiment came from 29 countries of Far East, Central and South Asia, Middle East, Africa, North and South America and Europe. They were collected through international seed exchange programme of the Welsh Plant Breeding Station, UK. Collections from different parts of Bangladesh including several wild types from hilly areas numbering 21 were also screened. All the 301 accessions were grown in lines, distance between plants and that between lines was 60 cm in summer and 45 cm in winter. Screening was 'It performed in a total of six sowings, 3 in winter and 3 in summer. All the accessions were sown in the 1st two sowings, 10 to 12 plants per accession. In later 4 sewings, only those accessions were grown which remained unaffected in the I st two sowings and 5 susceptible Iine were also grown as check. In last 3 sowings, much higher number of plants (100-150 per accession) were grown to confirm their resistance. All the usual cultural practices were followed, giving 2-3 irrigation in winter crops only. Insecticide spray was restricted to encourage the build up of vector colony so that adequate natural spread of the disease is achieved. Contact-grafting was made between vigorously growing young (4-5 weeks old) plants. Unsprouted buds of resistant plants were grafted on soft and growing part (usually 15-20 cm from stem apex) of infected plants by T-budding method.

Extensive search, made in this study, has screened out, for the first time, some resistant accessions which are expected to have significant contribution in okra cultivation.
