The Occurrence of Nematode Parasites in Nandid Fish

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study of nematode parasites infecting Nandid fish (Nandus nandus) was conducted during the period from January to December, 1979. In total 125 specimens of N. nandus were collected from the water bodies in and around Bangladesh Agricultural University Campus, Mymensingh and examined for nematode parasites. In total, 101 parasites were collected from 44 infected host fishes. Monthly fluctuations in the incidence of infection and variations of incidence with sex and size of the host fishes were determined.

Objectives:

(A) To collect the nematode parasites infecting N. nandus in and around BAU Campus; (b) to study the detailed morphological features of the nematode parasites of N. nandus to determine the taxonomic status; and (c) to determine the incidence of infection in relation to season, sex and size of the hosts.

Methodology:

One hundred and twenty five Nandid fishes ( N. nandus ) were collected from ponds, beels, rivers etc. in and around Bangladesh Agricultural University Cam- pus, Mymensingh in alive and freshly dead condition during the period from Ist week of January to 1st week of December, 1979. Fish samples were collected once a month and 10.12 fishes were collected at one sampling. Systematic inspection of the host specimens was done in the laboratory for the collection of nematode parasites immediately after the collection of fishes as far as possible; the uninspected host specimens were preserved in 5% formalin solution and the parasites were collected at the earliest opportunity. The collected parasites were cleaned in Iactophenol in such a way that its cuticle became transparent and the internal organs became easily visible for further study. Rest of the nematodes were preserved in 70% ethylalcohol. Microdissection of some of the parasites was done to study the important taxonomic characters such as spicules, papillae, spikes etc., with the help of sharp pointed needles and fine forceps under binocular dissecting microscope, Drawings were done with the help of camera lucida and measurements of the parasites were done by ocular-stage micrometer.

Achievement/Findings:

In this investigation two types of nematode parasites have been collected, Controcaecum sp. and Ascarididean larva. Most of the parasites (of both the groups) were found to be distributed in host body cavity in freely exposed condition and occasionally on surface of the digestive tract, kidney and sex glands. Incidence of infection was found to vary with type of parasite, season, sex and sometimes size of the hosts. In general, females and larger hosts were found to be more infected than males and the smaller ones.
