Performance of Some Local Rhizobium Inoculants and Nitragin on Nodulation, Dry Matter Production and Grain Yield of Davis Soybean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effects of some local Rhizobium inoculants were studied in a field trial against an imported inoculant 'Nitragin' using Davis soybean as the test crop. All the inoculants produced distinctly higher number of nodules per plant, dry weight of plant tops and roots as well as total dry matter weight and grain yield of the crop over control (uninoculated). Except grain yield. other growth parameters were found statistically identical due to different inoculants. However the local inoculant G1-13 was found statistically superior to all the local inoculants as well as the imported 'Nitragin' in producing grain yield. There was high positive correlation of nodules per plant with total dry matter weight and grain yield of the crop. The total dry matter weight also showed high positive correlation with the grain Yield.

Objectives:

The present investigation compared the efficiency of some local Rhizobium inoculants with Nitragm on Davis soybean.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted on a Non-calcareous Dark Grey Floodplain Soil (Sonatola series) of Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Myrnensingh during rabi season of 1980-81. The study was made with three locally prepared Rhizobium Inculants against Nitragin, a foreign inoculant obtained from USA using Davis soybean as the test crop. The experiment was carried out in an area where no soybean was grown previously. The soil of the experimental area was a silt loam having pH value 6.9, organic C 1.09%, CEC . 13.5 me/I00g soil. available P 26 ppm and exchangeable K 0.19 me/100 g soil. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications having unit plot size of 5mX 4m. No N fertilizer was used but a basal dose of 25 kg P per hectare as triple super-phosphate and 30 kg K per hectare as muriate of potash was applied at the time of final land preparation.

Achievement/Findings:

There was a highly significant effect of inoculation on the grain yield of the crop. All the inoculants produced markedly higher grain yield over control. The local inoculant G1-13 was fount statistically superior to all other inoculants in this study. Another local inoculant GII-7 produced almost equal amount of grain yield as that of Nitragin and both these inoculants produced higher grain yield over GII-5. The grain yield of the crop ranged from 465 kg per hectare in control to 1011 kg per hectare (117.4 % increase Over control) in G1-l3. The grain yield of the crop in present study showed high positive correlation with total nodules per plant (r=0.644 ), effective nodules per plant (r=0.687 ) and total dry matter weight ( r=0.841 ) of the crop.
