Effect of the Supplementation of Selenium Sodium Selenite, Vit. E and Methionine on Quality of Wool in Sheep

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A feeding experiment was carried out in the Agricultural University, Prague, with 15 Zirno-Merino wether of approximately 4 months of age assigned to 5 groups of 3 each for a period of 60 days to see the effect of different combinations of the supplemented selenium as Na₂_,SeO₃, vit. E and methionine on fineness, firmness and ductility of wool fibres. It has been observed that alI the groups showed wool finer than 80's grade which proved that selenium and other supplements in different combinations had no bad effect on the qualities of wool measured here. No significant differences among the groups were found in ductility and firmness of wool . But significant differences were observed in fineness of wool from different portions and from different supplementations.

Objectives:

To see the effect of the supplementation of selenium in different combinations with Vito E and methionine on the fineness, firmness and ductility of wool fibres of sheep.

Methodology:

A feeding experiment was conducted in the Agricultural University Farm Suchdol, Prague. with 15 Zirno-Merino wethers aged about 4 months for a period of 60 days, weighing on an ave- rage 2213 kg. The animals were assigned to 5 groups of 3 each at random. All the animajs were supplied with a basal ration, plus an allowance of Se, Vit. E and methionine to the treatment groups as shown by the feeding schedule. Everyday in the morning, before any feed 'Was supplied, each animal of the treatment groups received in addition to the basal ration a capsule containing 0.1 ppm selenium as sodium selenite capsule, group T 11 selenium capsule plus 6 ms of vitamin E as Dl-toco- pheryl acetate, group T 3 selenium capsule plus 2 gm methionine, and group T 4 selenium, vitamin E and methionine all together. The animals of group T 3 and T 4 were drenched 2 grn of methionine dissolved in warm water before the supply of Se plus vitamin E capsule, Water was supplied adlibitum twice daily in the morning at 9 a. m. and in the evening at 5 p. m.
