Studies on Leaf Blight of Wheat in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Leaf blight of wheat was investigated over a period of four years (1976-80). The disease was prevalent in a number of fields observed in seven different districtl of Bangladesh - Bogra, Dhaka, Jamalpur, Jessore, Mymensingh, Rajshahi and Tangail, The prevalence of the disease varied depending on the growing year and location. In 1979-80, the disease broke out in epidemic form at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Mymensingh and Kotwali, Jessore infecting 100% plants. The detailed symptoms of the disease have been described. Drechslera sorokiniana and Drechslera tritici-repentis appeared as the causal organisms of the leaf blight. Of the 85 wheat cultivars/lines tested under natural conditions of infection at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Myrnensingh, 10 appeared to be resistant, 14 moderately resistant, 15 moderately susceptible, 20 susceptible and 26 highly susceptible

Objectives:

To study the prevalence, symptoms and cause ( s ) of the blight as well as to determine the field reaction of 85 wheat cultivars I lines under trial in BAU Farm to the blight disease.

Methodology:

Natural occurrence of the leaf blight disease was observed in different localities of Bogra, Dhaka, Jamalpur, Jessore, Mymensingh, Rajshahi and Tangail districts during last four years (1976-80). In each area 10 to 30 fields of varying sizes (20-100 decimal) were casually observed for the prevalence of the disease. In 1979-80 the disease was studied in details in the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm. The study comprised of 85 wheat cultivars / lines grown for germplasm trial in the BAU-INA Co- ordinated programme on improvement of wheat. Symptoms of the disease was recorded in details at different stages of growth of the crop. The fungal organisms associated with the disease were isolated in blotter and potato dextrose agar ( PDA ) medium from the infected leaf blades and leaf sheaths collected from the selected cultivars / lines under the trial at BAU as well as from different fields observed in different districts of the country. Achievement/Findings:

The cultivars/lines showed considerable variation in their reactions to the disease. of the 85 cultivars/lines tested none was found immune; but 10 appeared as resistant, 14 moderately resistant 15 moderately susceptible, 20 susceptible and 26 highly susceptible.
