Field experiment was conducted in 250 farmers' fields in four districts of Bangladesh to evaluate three mustard varieties. The participating farmers were provided with short duration Aman seeds followed by training on mustard cultivation. Each of the participating farmers grow either one or more than one of the three varieties such as Tori-7, BARI Sharisha-14 and BARI Sharisha-15. The tested varieties varied in growth duration, yield. Growth duration of Tori-7 varied from 74 to 82 days, BARI Sharisha-14 from 78 to 94 days and BARI Sharsha15 from 87-93 days. The location variety showed significant interaction in growth duration, seed yield, production cost and gross margin. Across the location, Tori-7, BARI Sharisha-14 and BARI Sharisha-15 produced an average yield of 1.03, 1.61 and l.70 t ha-1, respectively. The average production cost of Tori-7, BARI Sharisha-14 and BARI Sharisha-15 was US$389, 404 and 408 per ha and that of gross margin was 260,617 and 660 US$ ha-1, respectively. Farmers preferred both the BARI Sharisha-14 and BARI Sharisha-15 over Tori-7 in all the locations.

To evaluate HYV mustard in yield and economic return of four regions of Bangladesh.

The experiment involved four regions viz., Faridpur, Jessore, Khulna and Mymensing of Bangladesh The experimental sites varied in annual minimum temperature of 21.1 - 22.2°C, annual maximum temperature 30.1 - 32.7 °C and mean annual rainfall of 1699 - 2268 mm . Soil characteristics and cropping intensity also varies to a great extent from one region to another. Farmers followed a uniform seed rate of 5 kg ha-1 across the sites and broadcasted seeds with 140-170 plants m-2. In Faridpur, Jessore and Mymensingh the mustard crop was established during 10-22 November 2012, while during 20 - 30 October 2013 in Khulna. All the tested fields in Faridpur received a uniform fertilizer dose of 118 kg N, 32 kg P, 45 kg K, 24 kg S, 1 kg Zn and B per ha, respectively. Fertilizer applications in Jessore, Khulna and Mymensingh varied widely between the sites and among the farmers' fields within the sites). No pesticides and herbicides were used in none of the fields. The crop was harvested when 80 - 90% maturity attained. Yield data was obtained from a random sample area of 5 m2 after sun drying the pods. The seed weight was adjusted to 12% moisture content. Economic data was recorded throw farmers' interview during group discussion. The experiment was conducted in a randomized incomplete block design. Seeds of two HYV mustard varieties, BARI Sharisha-14 and BARI Sharisha-15 were given to the farmers followed by training on mustard production. Farmers cultivated the HYVs and the local variety Tori-7 following their own management practices. The experiment involved 6 farmers in Jessore and 9 farmers in Faridpur, respectively. Each of the farmers in Jessore and Faridpur cultivated all the three tested varieties. In Khulna, 13 farmers cultivated T ori-7, 19 BARI Sharisha-14 and 60 farmers cultivated BARI Sharisha-15. In Mymensingh, the number of farmers for Tori-7, BARI Sharisha-14 and BARI Sharisha-15 were 30, 10 and 100, respectively. Each of the farmer's field was considered as one replication. The data was analyzed in incomplete block design using CROP STAT version 7.2. Combined analysis of the data across locations was done to test the variety site interaction. All the tested data showed significant variety site interaction.

Growth duration of the HYV mustard across the location varied about a week. Spatial variation in yield and gross margin was large. Among the tested mustard varieties, BARI Sharisha-15 gave the highest gross margin of US$ 728 ton-1 in Jessore and the lowest of US$ 501 ton-1 in Faridpur. BARI Sharisha-14 gave the highest gross return of US$ 721 ton-1in Mymensingh and US$ 430ton-1 in Faridpur. The overall high gross margin of mustard merits the adaptability of the crop to larger extends in the existing rice - rice cropping systems.
