Residual Effects of T. S. P. and Farmyard Manure Under Renewed Application of Urea on the Yield of Crops and Some Chemical Properties of Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A fertility trial was carried out from wheat season of 1975 to Transplant Aman (T. Arnan) season of 1977 in a silt loam soil of Brahmaputra alluvium ( Sonatola Soil series) with three rates of N (@ 0,45 and 90 kg N/ba (rom Urea), two rates of P (@ 0 and 30 kg P/ha from T. S. P.) and four rates of FY M ( @ 0,4.5,9'0 and 13.5 tons FYM/ha from rotten cow-dung) to see the effects of N, Pend FYM and residual effects of P and FYM on the yield of crops and some chemical properties of soil. It was observed that application of N significantly increased the grain yield of all crops. The direct and residual effects of P and FYM were significant upto the 6th crop (last crop of the study) except the first crop where the applied FYM failed to show any significant increase in yield. This combined effect 0f NP was remarkable in the 3rd (residual P) and 4th (renewed-P ) crops and that of NFYM in the 2nd crop (residual FYM). Other interactions did not show any significant effect on yield. Cropping brought some inconsistent changes in different treatments. Soil analysis showed some beneficial effect of N, P and FYM on Org. C, available P and exchangeable Ca. Their effects on total N, exchangeable K+ and soil pH were very negligible. Cropping Slightly decreased the content of available-P and organic carbon content of soil.

Objectives:

To evaluate the residual effect of P-fertilizers and Farmyard Manure on crop yield and soil properties in our own situation.

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out in the non-calcareous, dark-grey. flood plain, silt loam (Sonatola Soil Series) soil of Bangladesh Agricultural University ( BAU ) farm at Mymensingh from wheat season of 1975 to Transplant Aman (T. Aman ) season of 1977 to see the effects of N, P and 'FYM ( Farmyard Manure) and residual effects of P and FYM on crop yields and some chemical properties of soil. There were 24 treatment combinations obtained from three rates of N (@ O. 45 and 90 kg N / ha from Urea), two rates of P ( @ 0 and 30 kg P,ha from T. S. P. ) and four rates of FYM (@ 0, 4.5, 9.0 and 13.5 tons FYM/ha from rotten cow-dung). They were replicated three times following a factorial randomized block design. The full doses of P and FYM were applied in 1975 before sowing the seeds of 1st crop (wheat) and the residual effects were seen in 2nd and 3rd crop. Again the same doses of P and FYM were applied in the 4th crop and the residual effects were seen in the 5th crop and 6th crop. Nitrogen, at the rates mentioned above, were renewed in all crops in three splits i, e. before sowing / transplantation, at maximum tillering stage and at prebooting stage. After harvest of each crop a representative sample from individual plots were taken to the Laboratory, dried in an oven at 65°C. weighed and calculated in terms of kg per hectare. Finally they were expressed in percentage by taking the grain yield of control as 100. Initial soil samples at a depth of 0-15 em were collected before applying manure and fertilizers in 1975. Again, the soil samples from individual plots were collected from the depth mentioned above after the harvest of each crop (except l st crop).

Achievement/Findings:

In this article - what we wanted to emphasis is that our farmers do not need to apply P fertilizer and organic manure to their soil in every crop. This is required only after every third crop which is sufficient to maintain the fertility of the soil and earn an economically profitable yield. Our farmers must also know that the addition of organic manure will solve the problem of S and Zn in rice soils.
