Quantitative Characteristics of Indian Olive Germplasm (elaeocarpus Floribundus) at Jainiapur, Sylhet

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The quantitative characteristics of twelve Indian olive germplasm were studied at CRS, Jainiapur, Sylhet. There were variation was found among the germplasm regarding different quantitative characteristics of fruits. In case of fruit shape, EF Jai-017 and EF Jai-021 yielded elongated shape fruit, Elliptic shape fruit was found in EF Jai-004, EF Jai-007, EF Jai-014, EF Jai-016 and EF Jai-022, while other germplasm yielded oval shaped fruit. Fruits of all the germplasm were of green color at young stage but turns in different colors at maturity. EF Jai-002, EF Jai-017, EF Jai-020, EF Jai-021, EF Jai-022 and EF Jai-024 remains green, but other germplasm turns to light green at maturity. In case of fruit apex pointed fruit apex, was observed in EF Jai-002, EF Jai-004, EF Jai-014, EF Jai-022, EF Jai-024 and EF Jai-025 while fruits of other germplasm were with rounded fruit apex. Flesh texture and flesh color of all the germplasm were crispy and off-white, respectively.

Objectives:

To study the quantitative characteristics of Indian olive germplasm at Jainiapur, Sylhet

To evaluate, characterized and documented the quantitative characteristics Indian olive germplasm for improvement

To select superior Indian olive germplam in respect to quantitative characteristics for developed as varieties.

Methodology:

The quantitative characteristics of twelve Indian olive germplasm were studied at the Citrus Research Station (CRS), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Jaintapur, Sylhet during February 2013 to May 2014. Twelve Indian olive germplasm viz. EF Jai-004, EF Jai-006, EF Jai-007, EF Jai-014, EF Jai-016, EF Jai-017, EF Jai-020, EF Jai-021, EF Jai-022, EF Jai-023, EF Jai-024 and EF Jai-025 were included in the study. These plants were of ten years of age having uniform growth. The plants were fertilized twice in a year first in May-June and second in September-October. Each plant was fertilized with 30 kg cowdung, 750 g urea, 500g TSP, 500 g MoP, 200 g gypsum, respectively. The plants were irrigated twice during the time of flowering and fruit set at an interval of 15 days. Data different quantitative characteristics viz. shape of fruit, skin color, pulp color, fruit apex, Flesh texture and organoleptic taste were recorded as per IPGRI descriptors of tropical fruits and the mean data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

From the above findings it may be concluded that a wide variation regarding fruit shape, skin colour and fruit apex were found, but att the germplasm exhibited flesh having crispy texture with off-white colour.
