Study of Pulse Rate of the Indigenous Goat in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted on the pulse rate of normal indigenous goats for one year. This study shows the effect of age, seasons, sex and time of day on the pulse rate based on data from 569 animals, comprising 328 males and 241 females from different areas of Mymensingh and Bogra districts. The goats were assigned to seven age groups and were maintained under the same plane of nutrition and management. No significant differences of pulse rate were observed among the age groups, seasons, between sexes and time of day. Apparently higher pulse rate was found in summer and spring both for male and female goats.

Objectives:

To study the pulse rate and influence of age, sex, time of day and seasons on the pulse rate for indigenous goats under local condition.

Methodology:

Five hundred and sixty nine goats (male and female), aged from one month to forty two months, were studied at random from different areas of the districts of Mymensingh and Bogra in Bangladesh. The animals were apparently normal and were provided with the same type of food and management. The animals were assigned to seven age groups. The period of investigation included Autumn (September.November), Winter ( December-February), Summer (June.August). and Spring (March-May; to observe the seasonal effects. Morning and evening pulse rates were recorded to see the diurnal effects. The pulse rate was enumerated by placing the band at the femoral artery inside the hind limb rather more than half way between stifle and hip joints as per methods stated by Miller and Robertson ( 1959). The data were analyzed statistically.
